Is 307 the best way to handle temporarily disabled items ?
-
I was wondering what would be the best way to handle temporarily disabled items. There is 302 and 307 and from what I understand 307 redirect is the HTTP 1.1 successor of the 302 redirect.
Any one has any experience on how Google handles 307?
I am thinking I 307 the temp disabled pages to a generic page like site.com/we-are-adding-some-final-touches-to-this.html where we will explain to users why an item would be disabled and will give them an option to get notification when it goes back up.
Finally when it goes back up I remove the 307 redirect and make the page live.

302 and 307 are the same except for one small thing, with a 307, the redirect must be the same method as the original request, if the original was a GET then the redirect must be a GET, if it was a POST the redirect must be a POST.
A 302 allows for a change in method, but who ever changes the method? just use a 302 -
First UGC should be published after verification and approval of moderator. So you may need to change the process of publishing content on the page.
Incase of 302 or 307 your original page will still remain in cache and you may get duplication content penalty.
If you already know which pages have copy right issues then you remove the content. mark the pages as no-index, follow. Make them index follow as soon as you have original piece of content written on them.

Thanks for your reply Zafaryab .
In our case we have to disable user generated content that at times have copyright issues, so we can't show the content as is and let us assume we disable 50 - 60 items a month . There is no way we can have unique content across all these disabled pages .. so I think we might need to look at an option that allows us to redirect to a temp page and bring the pages back to the index once the issue with the content has been resolved.

If your product is temporarily unavailable then don't redirect. display a message on the same page that "product is temporarily unavailable". You may also display some relevant product and categories but don't redirect.

Best way to absorb discontinued brand/domain?
Our parent company is looking to absorb the domain of a brand we are discontinuing. The domain we want to absorb has a thousands of blog posts from 2010 onward. Much of the content is old but still high-converting. We would like to keep as much of the potential traffic as possible, but we don't want the parent website to become too large or lose credibility with too many 301 redirects. Any advice on the best way to do this?

What's best practice for cart pages?
i don't mean e-commerce site in general, but the actual cart page itself. What's best practice for the links that customers click to add products to the cart, and the cart page itself? Also, I use vanity URLs for my cart links which redirect to the actual cart page with the parameters applied. Should I use use 301 or 302 redirects for the links? Do I make the cart page's canonical tag point back to the store home page so that I'm not accruing link juice to a page that customers don't actually want to land on from search? I'm kinda surprised at the dearth of information out there on this, or maybe I'm not looking in the right places?

How to Handle Website Merge?
We are a law firm and have another law firm merging into ours. Our branding will remain the same, but I am trying to figure out how to best handle their website transition. Should we link it to ours (although their PR & page authority are not significant) or should I map each page to ours with similar content with a redirect? MY main concerns are not damaging our website's SEO by doing something search engine's would frown on and also to try to take advantage of any organic traffic or referral traffic. Or maybe some combination - link homepage with added verbage that attorney is now with our firm and a link and redirect the sub-pages? I look forward to thoughts from anyone who might have experience with this type to issue. Thanks in advance! JulieHow t

What is the best way to handle links that lead to a 404 page
Hi Team Moz, I am working through a site cutover with an entirely new URL structure and have a bunch of pages that could not, would not or just plain don't redirect to new pages. Steps I have taken: Multiple new sitemaps submitted with new URLs and the indexing looks solid used webmasters to remove urls with natural result listings that did not redirect and produce urls Completely built out new ppc campaigns with new URL structures contacted few major link partners Now here is my question: I have a pages that produce 404s that are linked to in forums, slick deals and stuff like that which will not be redirected. Is disavowing these links the correct thing to do?

E-commerce categrory out of stock items
Hi All, I would like to hide all the products that are out of stock on my category pages, for example with a display:none (maybe there are better options/techniques do this....tips are welcome). The visitor has the options to reveal the out of stock items by using one of the filters, or by using a check-box "Show out of stock items". Would this still be in line with Google's guidelines? Am I taking a risk to get a penalty cause I'm hiding content? In my opinion it would not, cause I'm doing this to achieve a better user experience. Items are most of the time out of stock for a week not any longer. Hope to hear from you guys. Thanks in advance Richard

How best to redirect URL from expired classified ads?
We have problem because our content are classifieds. Every ad expired after one or two mounts and then ad becomes inactive and we keep his page for one mount latter like a same page but we ad a notice that ad is inactive. After that we delete the ad and his page but need to redirect that URL to search results page which contains similar ads because we don't want to lose the traffic form that pages. How is the best way to redirect ad URL? Our thinking was to redirect internal without 301 redirection because the httacces file will be very big after a while and we are thinking to try a canonicalization because we don't want engine to think that we have to much duplicate content.
