Link building for a non-linkable site?
-
Hello,
I am trying to zone in on a link building strategy for a non-linkable site.
What I mean by non-linkable is I have a construction site. It's a family owned and operated small business.
Our clients are farmers and older people usually.
We go do a job, do it right the first time, and leave.
Basically even if a couple of people who link to me for some weird reason, this is no way in the realm of 6,000 that my main competition has.
I have tried to get as many quality citation resources as possible by using get listed, and white spark.
My domain authority is only 16 though, so I must be able to increase this somehow.
I have listed with Google +, Bing, Yahoo and every other major citation I could find.
So now with trying too increase links with other ideas.
I read somewhere to donate to charitable organizations, but if they link back to me as a donor, in an unrelated field, isn't that spammy like?
So a construction site donating to a disease website, and then getting a backlink in return, does that look weird.
It just seems like there are so many rules that I do not want to mess something up.
I do not want get spammy links, but not sure if citations count as links so I am doing a win-win thing?
Thanks for any tips
Chris

Hi Chris,
Your post has made me curious about your competitor's link profile. If the industry is tough to get links to, what has he done to get 6,000 links. Sounds like you know the number of links he has - have the analyzed where they are coming from? Are they natural and high-quality or are they weird and potentially a red flag to Google?
I also think your industry sounds interesting. If you are doing construction for farmers, specifically, I'm guessing you're building some kind of agricultural structures. Would this be something that you could create an interesting infographic around that could be helpful to others in your industry, earning you industry-relevant links? How about videos? And I completely agree with Erwan's comments about developing great content on the site.
And here's a great WBF from Rand on earning links via social mentions:

Also, this one from Paddy Moogan is a bit old now, but still contains some good, creative ideas:

Local SEO is a very interesting field in that, in many cases, linkbuilding isn't even really necessary. Yes, in really tough verticals like law, it may be, but often it isn't, provided the business has an established, excellent website, clean citations and ongoing reviews coming in. How is your competitor doing in these areas and is there a chance you could surpass him in these things?
Hope these thoughts are helpful!

Thanks, this is the post I wanted to mention.

There's a great set of answers for a very similar question at http://moz.com/community/q/how-to-get-links-for-boring-niches-industries.

1/Links = 40% of ranking factors.
Try the first step to rank : write good content. Even a family owned and operated small business can do it.
Egol wrote a great answer about this recently but I can't find the post anymore. The idea is to write about your customers, their problems and how you help them #InboundMarketing.
2/ IMO, a spammy link is a link you can't control. With a charitable organization, you can always ask them to remove the link in case of a possible penalty. If their thank you page has a high PR, I would take the risk.
3/ When I get a new customer, I try to get him links from the town hall website, the local chamber of commerce, his suppliers, his clients, school they accept a trainee from etc. Try to think to everyone who has an IRL link with your client.

Am I better off with ten links from one site or one link from ten sites?
I am writing a series of linked-back articles for a highly-ranked web publisher, but wonder if I'd be better off sharing the articles across different sites. My goal is to grow our domain authority and SEO rankings.

Accidentally generated navigation links that point to American site from Australian site.
Somehow we ended up getting hundreds-of-thousands of links coming from our .au (Australia site) to our .com (America site). We believe that something happened during a change that turned a handful of our example.com.au navigational and footer links into back links pointing to example.com and sub-domains of the American version. We are currently fixing this, but we are wondering if this could potentially be problematic in terms of a penguin penalty due to an unnatural linking campaign or back link scheme. Could this error create major problems for us in the near future if we have corrected the issue? Your thoughts are welcome! Thanks!

Links I am not Building?
Hi All, I check webmaster multiple times on a daily basis, and I noticed some links that I have not worked on and look a bit spammy, is it possible for people to purposely pont bad links in my direction? If that is the case is there a way for me to remove them myself? Also the number of total backlinks are very different in Webmaster and my Open Site Explorer, is this normal? Thanks again !

How do you put together a link building strategy?
I know after all the Google changes link building is different than it used to be. How do I put a link building strategy together that I can understand and follow? I have fixed most of the crawl errors and my site is still low on the search for most of my targeted keywords. Is link building the answer? Or are there other options I'm missing?

Observation on Linking to other sites
Hello, I have a blog for one year now and in the overwall is going great. In all this time it was an awesome way to discovery some SEO mysterious and learn with experience wich in my point of view is the best way to do it. Now my observation is about links to other sites and what does that do. At the present I have about 35 keywords in the 3 first places in Google, bing e Yahoo. All good. I notice that the posts that I have links (dofolow) to other sites are performing better then those ones that only have internal-links. And Its curious that this change as starting to surface in Dezember of 2011. Now the confusion is about the SEOmoz observation towards external links. "You should avoid having too many (roughly defined as more than 100) hyperlinks on any given page. When search engine spiders crawl the Internet they are limited by technology resources and are only able to crawl a certain number of links per webpage. In addition, search engine algorithms divide the value of some popularity metrics by the amount of links on a given page." Now hell with this observation I say. Its working for me and for now on I will actually apply this SEO strategy when Im talking about a subject in a post:) What do you guys think? Whats your experince on this? Regards, Pedro M Pereira

Your opinion of link building strategy
Hi all, I just started working on the optimization of highly competitive keywords on one website. I already started posting articles in reputable directories, but as you know, more quality links are needed. To do that I created the following strategy: (see the uploaded image or http://i.imgur.com/9HCiM.png) The idea is to buy new domain and build page rank to this domain by other 3,4 domains that I will buy with PR3. Those 3 domains will contain low quality text generated by spinner just to keep that PR. Then those 3 domains will give PR to the newly created website which will contain only professionally written information and sometimes will give links to me. At the end I will get high quality links. I know it's hard work, but posting PR articles will not be enough. I will continue to spy the competition via SEOMoz OSE but for now that is the idea that I have for quality links. Share your opinion 🙂 9HCiM.png
