Hello all,

We can't use Moz Local as we're in the UK. Tempted to use Whitespark, but not quite sure what the differences are between the two.

Also, can a website design / digital marketing agency be considered to be a local business - in Googles eyes?

Thanks!
William

Hey Mary!

Nice to see you here! That's correct - Yahoo is not currently one of our supported Network Partners. Our 7 supported partners to whom we currently push data are:

Infogroup

Neustar/Localeze

Acxiom

Superpages

Factual

Foursquare

Best of the Web

We'll hope to expand our network in future, but for now, this is the list:)

Hi - I have a few questions about Whitespark.

Once the initial cleanup is complete & your listing(s) are propagated throughout the local ecosystem, what if updates to listings need to be made in the future? Is there one central place to make them? If so, are there additional fees to make future updates?

Also, is there an easy way to manage multiple listings? Right now, that's what's making me lean more towards MozLocal - easy to update multiple locations at once as often as necessary (thinking hours, descriptions, etc. vs. NAP).

Thanks!

I recently discovered that Moz Local does not distribute data to Yahoo!Local.

Hi William,

So sorry Moz Local can't be in the running for serving a non-US-based business. Nyagoslav has given you a good rundown - I do want to be clear that our duplicate finder app can be really helpful in closing out duplicates on our network partner platforms, but I'm sorry our service doesn't currently support the UK.

For international citation building, the 2 most highly-spoken of services in the Local SEO world tend to be either Whitespark or BrightLocal. I would suggest you check out the features of both to see which is the most ideal match for your needs.

Hey William,

First, I'd like to mention that I am Nyagoslav (of Whitespark), and not Darren, but I am using his account to reply 🙂 I know that my comment would be biased, no matter how hard I try for it not to be, and it is important that you view it as such. Here is an answer I recently gave to a very similar question (advantages/disadavantages of Yext, Moz Local, and Whitespark Citation Audit & Clean-up):

here are some general notes and Q&As that might help in your decision making. Of course all the decision making should also be made on case-by-case basis, but I will base my notes on the case(s) you described in your original post.

1. Will each of these services take care of all of your duplicate listings, or listings that feature incorrect, outdated, or fake information that should be removed?

Both Moz Local and Yext are uni-linear, automation-based systems. This means that they will, in general, find and fix one listing per website (with the note that they cover only the websites that are part of their networks). They offer different types of add-ons that could deal with duplicates, but additional manual work on your end would be required, i.e. you would need to help them find the duplicates. I have personally had negative experience specifically with the duplicate suppression process of Yext. A few of our clients have had active Yext subscriptions at the time they signed up for our citation clean-up or general local SEO services. That is why I seeked the help of Yext's support to try and get rid of some of the duplicate listings on the sites that are part of their network (note: some of the subscriptions had been active for more than 2 years, but there were still tens of duplicate listings on the sites part of Yext's network). Unfortunately, in almost all of the cases I had absolutely no success going through Yext's support and that is why I did the duplicate clean-ups manually.

2. Will each of these services cover all of the important bases that would need to be covered in terms of citation auditing and clean-up?

The important bases could tentatively be divided in the following categories:

• Data aggregators (ExpressUpdate, Acxiom, Localeze, Factual)
• Important top-level search platforms (Google, Bing, Yahoo, Apple Maps)
• Most important citation sources (the likes of YP, Yelp, Citysearch, Superpages)
• Most important secondary citation sources (the likes of MerchantCircle, MojoPages, Kudzu)

Yext cover:

• Factual + they do have some relationship with ExpressUpdate, but as far as I understand it is available only for some users
• Bing + Yahoo
• Some of the most important citation sources
• Some of the most important secondary citation sources

Moz Local cover:

• All the data aggregators
• Google + Bing + Yahoo
• Some of the most important citation sources
• Basically none of the secondary citation sources

Our service covers:

• All the data aggregators
• All the important top-level search platforms
• All the most important citation sources (except for WhitePages and their network, which is monopolized by Yext)
• All the most important secondary citation sources

3. What is the cost and sustainability of the service?

Moz Local: $84/year
Yext: $500 to $1,000/year
Our service: $750 (one time)

I have previously done a case study on what happens when one cancels their Yext subscription. You could find it here.

4. What would be your time involvement and time until work is done?

With Yext, the information should be distributed instantly or near-instantly across their network. With Moz Local, as far as I know, it takes a few hours. With our service it takes about 1 month, as it is a manual process.

It would take you approximately 15 minutes to get set up on Yext or Moz Local. Your involvement would be about 30 minutes overall with our service.

Regarding your second question - historically web design firms have had problems getting local presence on Google (Google Maps/Places/Plus Local). However, this changed a few months ago. Please check this article for reference.

I hope this helps!

Nyagoslav

What Service Page Strategy Should We Use to Target City-Specific Local Intent Service Keywords?

local seo local ranking factors service pages content optimization service based website

Hey guys! We are targeting a number of cities in the Nassau and Suffolk County areas for foundation repair, insulation, and mold remediation keywords, and we were debating on creating city-specific pages for each location and service, or creating one service page for each type of service that contains all of the services and solutions within that service category for each city. Example: City-Specific Pages for Each Service: One page for say foundation repair, one page for foundation crack repair, one page for foundation problems, etc. (for each target city) Service Category Pages for Each City: One page for foundation contractors that lists all services on one page in sections. Which one do you think is better for local SEO and rankings? Both seem to have their advantages and disadvantages to me. Just to throw a couple out there, the category pages may not rank as high as the city pages for each individual service if our competitors have a whole page designed for that service and we only have a part of a page covering the topic. At the same time, they would save labor hours, technical issues would be less, and they would be condensed, and we would have WAY less mess on the backend. I appreciate your expert opinion on this one. The site is www. zavzaseal.com in case you want to check us out.

Unsolved GMB Local SEO question

seo audit

I am trying to diagnose how one particular competitor is smoking us in local rankings. I came across a text field “Service Details' within Google My Business Services. This allows me to put in a brief description of each service we offer. My thought is that this could be a good place for keywords. That said, the descriptions are not public facing (or to the best of my knowledge) so I am reluctant to do all the work for nothing. I am wondering if anyone has filled these out and if there were any noticeable results. Any insight is appreciated

Local Site stuck on page 2 for years. Can’t penetrate page 1! Help!

Hey there Moz community! This is the first time I've ever asked a question here so please forgive if I slip up on any etiquette. I manage a website for a small Orlando Florida family law and divorce law firm who are targeting search phrases that include those "Orlando divorce attorney" variants. The site is located at https://www.affordablefamilylawyer.com/ If you run a search for "Orlando divorce attorney" along with close variant search terms our law firm website for about the past two years has hovered at the top of the second page of google but has never actually penetrated page 1. When you examine metrics such as page authority, domain authority, trust, and other traditional metrics it tells you that our site should be on page 1 but alas it's not happening. We have, however been featured quite often in the three pack for the local listings for the target search terms. Though valuable, our goal has always been to be featured in the top three of the organic search results. To add to the confusion we have a practice area page located at https://www.affordablefamilylawyer.com/orlando-divorce-lawyer/ dedicated to divorce and expected that page to rank for these divorce attorney search terms but it will not rank for the search terms and instead our homepage ranks for them every single time regardless of how we swap around the optimization on the page. Never had any manual actions. any help you guys can offer is greatly appreciated and I really appreciate your time!

International Versus Local Backlinks?

I'm running a dentist's website and I've been wondering if there is any additional benefit to achieving local backlinks from other medical sites versus larger international ones? For example, if I had a blog article that I wanted another site to link to, would you choose the local medical website within the same city or the international one that has more viewers?

Does the physical location of a server effect the local rankings of a site?

I've just been running a report on a site and noticed that while they have a .co.uk domain it is hosted on a server in the United States and just wondered if anyone was aware, if the physical location of a server mattered to search engines for ranking purposes especially with local search?

How to find best local websites?

For example, I'd like to type in a zipcode and get the highest ranking websites by DA/whatever metric the software uses, within a 25 mile radius? Does that type of service exist? I'm looking to build up our local links, but most of the websites have extremely low authority. I'm trying to find some good ones without having to manually check each one. Thanks, Ruben

Local Search - Google Mobile Results (Web&App)

Hi, I have a client with multiple locations. One of the locations manager is searching for branded and non-branded keywords on his mobile phone and not able to locate the business (within the parking lot of the location). Our ranking reports via a local search platform and manual checks indicate the location is actually ranking well. and we're seeing progress in GA. Has anyone deal with something like this before? This is a location that recently opened to the public. The concern is around mobile web and app results. I'm looking for some guidance around how to approach the situation. I'm sorry I cannot provide more details on the client.

I am ranking for local broad terms, but I am not ranking when geo-modifier is included.

I have noticed that my rankings for broad terms have dramatically improved in the area I service. But, when I put the broad term in my search query with a geo-modifier I notice I am still not ranking even though my domain authority and page authority is higher than the competitor who is ranking. Why might this be? I am not penalized, or have a manual action. I am also featured in more hyperlocal niche directories.
