Using Google structured Data for SEO benefit
-
Hi there
I run www.isacleanse.com.au and I've set up some Structured data using Google Webmaster Tools which says it will be picked up during the next Google update (has been set up over 4 weeks ago), however I dont seem to see any of the structured data for the products/reviews/ratings etc coming through in search results.
Question at hand: Is there additional things I need to do in the code of the website or should this be sufficient? (see attached screenshot)

Hello Sandi,
That was just one example. I came across several others in which there were multiple versions of the same page with self-referencing rel canonical tags. I would fix that as soon as possible by removing and redirecting one of the versions or choosing a single canonical.
I think a directory called /buy-isagenix/ is a little bit spammy, but not so much that I would worry about doing a bunch of redirects at this point. You can probably just leave it as-is.
Make sure you have 100% uniquely written content on all of your pages, including the product pages, to avoid these situations: http://tinyurl.com/povmkr9 .
Hopefully fixing the duplicate content problems from the non-canonical URLs and the manufacturer-supplied copy will help your rankings a bit.

I was using some A/B Testing with different pages hence the 2 differnt URLs, forgot about the /isagenix-products/ as that hasnt been used for a while
'Buy Isagenix' is a prefix that the developer made for the products which is a 'post type' that has this slug name... is this better to have removed?

I don't think the quantity of products with marked up data would cause you to rank any lower, all other factors being equal.
There are lots of things on your site that could be contributing to this. For example, what is the difference between these two pages, each of which has its own self-referencing rel canonical tag?
http://www.isacleanse.com.au/buy-isagenix/isagenix-presidents-pak/
http://www.isacleanse.com.au/isagenix-products/presidents-pak/
What is the purpose of the /buy-isagenix/ directory other than keyword stuffing the URL?
Are you aware of the duplicate content out there on your product descriptions from all of the other sites selling the same things? http://tinyurl.com/povmkr9
Why are you taken to another website when you click "Buy" which asks you to click "Buy" all over again? These are the types of things that would make an affiliate site rank lower in search engines than an actual eCommerce site.

Back to this one... would having a lot of products with marked up data (via webmaster tools and not on page) hurt SEO rankings? I have not got any warning/notice etc in Google Webmaster tools about it.
Search term 'buy isagenix' on Google Australia
Product listing page not in top 50
http://www.isacleanse.com.au/buy-isagenix15th Result on Google Australia for 'buy isagenix' is a different page on my website:

Thanks Everett.. you are spot on, I used the Data Highlighter in Google Webmaster tools. Is using SChema markup a better way of doing this or do they essentially do the same thing?
-
Everett's comment here is super important - make sure you read it and the resource he has passed along.

Just because you mark up the page doesn't mean Google will update their SERPs to show enhanced listings for that page. They will often ignore markup on sites that they deem to be low quality, or which do not have enough brand recognition and/or authority yet. They may also choose not to show it if they think the reviews are fake or censored to show only the good ones.
Here are some reasons why Google may decide not to show rich snippets in SERPs after you have used the Data Highlighter (which I'm assuming is what you used since I don't see any actual Schema markup in the code): https://developers.google.com/structured-data/policies?rd=1

Hi Sandi
According to Google's FAQ section:
"Once you've marked up your site's content, Google will discover it the next time we crawl your site (although it may take some time for rich snippets to appear in search results, if we do choose to display rich snippets for your site). If you're marking up your content for rich snippets, you can let us know. Google won't be able to individually reply to your message, but we may use the information you supply to improve our detection and display of marked-up content." I would also take a look at the Google Structured Data Testing Tool and make sure that everything is being found properly through there as well.
It looks to be a "be patient and wait" game. One thing I would do though, because Schema markup has the potential to assist in better visibility, is start tracking impressions / clicks / average rankings for pages you put markup on. Benchmark your performance over time and see if you are seeing better metrics.
You can also connect your Search Console to Google Analytics and create shortcut reports for these metrics so it's a quick click when you want to access the reports. Just a thought.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

SEO Implications of using Images for Article Titles
Hi guys! New to Moz Pro. I just recently completed an online course with Moz... I have a client who is writing some new content for their site, and we are approaching it with SEO in mind. I was wondering about using an image with text on it as the article title, instead of an actual "text on the page" title. Wondering if that's going to "cost" us anything, SEO wise. I guess we could use alt-text/title/description fields to make sure the keywords are crawlable for our article title but do they have less "weight" than a standard title? How does that work? Hope my question makes sense. Article header attached mB0PXsA.jpg

Image heavy pages: Google friendly fonts / seo text etc
Hi Google friendly fonts - are these in wide use now, do they work ? If you have image heavy site do they work just as well as using what we used to call 'seo text'. I have heard that 'seo text' not really used anymore or at least rebranded to 'helpful, informative paragraph or two of body copy about the page with a couple of the pages target keywords in it'. I take it if fonts in image not google friendly then should still ask dev for some space to fit in a para or two of some proper body copy, with couple of pages target kw in it ? Also looking like if i succeed in this request will be below the fold, how hard should i fight for it to be above the fold ? cheers dan

Google rel hell
So apologies in advance for this question, but: Can someone explain whether as a site we should be using the "rel author" tag or the "rel publisher" tag? 1. We don't really need to distinguish between the people who write our content. 2. We definitely do need to establish ownership of our content, as unfortunately it has been widely copied. We are spending quite a bit of time filing DMCA notices. 3. Do we need to apply either tag to every page? Or does "del publisher" just need to be applied to the homepage to cover the rest of the site? 4. What looks better in the search results? - a person's face or a company logo? If prefer a face, but understand we need to promote our brand. Thanks P

Not using H1's with keywords to simulate natural non SEO'd content?
There has been a lot of talk lately about making a website seem like it is not SEO'd to avoid over optimization penalties with the recent Google Algorithmic updates. Has anyone come across the practice of not using Headings (H1's, H2's etc..) properly to simulate that the current webpage isn't over optimized? I've come across a site that used to use multiple keywords within their headings & now they are using none. In fact they are marking their company name & logo as an H1 and non keyworded H2's such as our work or Contact. Is anyone holding back on their old SEO tactics to not seem over optimized to Google? Thanks!

Main page deindexed by google.
3 days ago our main page('/') has stopped appear in google results. Rest of pages works fine. Even our main page from canadian version of site with similar content works fine. Some times canadian page appears for key word where we had our com version before. But I think this is just result of disappearing com version. Any suggestion were to look? Messages box in google webmastertools is empty. Could this be the question too long page title? PS: Does any way exist to check if we were punished by Google and reason of this? For Bing and Yahoo everything works fine. PPS: We have just found that "cache:our_site.com" and "info:our_site.com" returns in google our_site.ca. So this should be reason of problem. So now we are looking how to fix this.

Meta Description not displaying in Google
Hi Mozzers, I have a client that wants to change the way the meta description for some of his pages is being displayed. I've tried using the NOOPD and NOYDIR tags and its not worked. This isn't the client but perform this search in Google.ie - "accommodation newry daft" you get this result - http://www.google.ie/#hl=en&sclient=psy-ab&q=accommodation+newry+daft&pbx=1&oq=accommodation+newry+daft&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=11197l11712l2l12016l5l5l0l0l0l0l186l851l0.5l5l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=f5c640577bb5a285&biw=1600&bih=775 See how Daft.com (2nd results down) has the text "10+ items" in the description- my client has this as well as do many other competitors but its not present in the meta description tag. Anyone know how to get rid of this and get the good old meta descrition in the SERPs? Thanks BUsh

WordPress (.com) and SEO
I am in my 30 day trial and very interested in my results. I think I am probably in a small minority in having the same web site up and running for approaching 17 years (registered in January 1995 :)) but only now am I looking at SEO seriously (to the extent that I want to learn more myself, as opposed to having others promise great fortune!)). Anyway, before committing to SEOMoz on an ongoing basis I want to understand just how actionable the information on my dashboard is. With that in mind, here's the first of what is (hopefully) a series questions that about low-hanging fruit I might be able to check off quickly. I recently brought up a new blog on WordPress.com (note - hosted by WordPress, not a self-hosted implementation). I have had this blog running for less than a month and have just 18 posts. And I am being overwhelmed with thoudands of errors/warnings from SEOMoz. These fall into a few categories: Duplicate content: As I understand it, each TAG I associate with a single blog post creates a unique URL. For example, if I have a single post with tags for "flowers", "wine" and "cakes", I get URLs generated such as <blog url="">/flowers, <blog url="">/wines and <blog url="">/cakes. Obviously, tagging posts is a common scenario. Must I just accept these duplicate content warnings?</blog></blog></blog> Title element too long: These are self generated by WordPress.com and the default format includes the date the post was submitted (which takes a bunch of characters followed by the title used). Many of the posts are well over 70 and this seems really easy to do. Missing meta-description: As far as I can tell, Wordpress.com doesn't give me an option to specify these. So, must I just accept these issues if I use WordPress.com (which, again, seems like a very common scenario) and how negative is this to me? Thanks. Mark

Page title structure?
From an SEO and user perspective what structure do you recommend for page titles. For example (given that they shouldn't ideally be more than 70 characters) :- Keywords (maybe two or three) | Company Name | more keywords I understood the best place for the company name was about second place. Is this now the considered view taking into consideration 'branding' which has been flagged up as the way forward. Keywords are separated by the vertical bar | - any thoughts? For 'house keeping' pages such as Privacy Policy - should this be optmised or simply stated as 'privacy policy' Thanks
