Ranking for a brand term with "&" (and) in the name?
-
Hello Moz community.
We have a company that rebranded their name to "Bar & Cocoa" with the URL https://barandcocoa.com/. It's been about 3 months, and the website has yet to show up organically anywhere within the first 50 results foer their brand terms. It seems that Google pretty much ignores the "&" or "and" word when typing in bar & cocoa, or bar and cocoa in search. You'd think with that with the exact domain name, it would at least move the needle a bit, but it has not helped.
Even being in Denver, I'm getting results for a "Bar Cocoa" business located in Charlotte, NC, and the secondary pages that belong to that business, and then a bunch of other companies, products and irrelevant search results (like a parked domain)!
Any suggestions or ideas, please help!

Hi Pashmina,
It looks to me like the problem is that Google doesn't yet understand that "Bar & Cocoa" is a brand in and of itself. Until they receive the signal that "Bar & cocoa" (or "bar and cocoa") is a different query intent than "bar cocoa", this will continue to be an issue. Focus on building your brand online; in particular, I recommend researching the Knowledge Graph to understand how Google catalogs entities. Some things to try:
- Roman's suggestion to implement Schema markup is a good one; I actually recommend implementing markup both inline and via JSON-LD in your header (you can also use Google Tag Manager to implement JSON-LD schema markup; check out this awesome post by Chris Goddard for more on how to do that: https://moz.com/blog/using-google-tag-manager-to-dynamically-generate-schema-org-json-ld-tags). Make sure you use Store markup on your home page to mark up your business name, logo, contact information, and other important details about your business, and mark up as much information about your products as you can.
- Spend some time doing some online-focused PR (that's public relations, not page rank); the goal should be to get mentions of your brand name alongside relevant words about your products (like "chocolate shop") in reputable news outlets. It would be ideal if this coverage resulted in links back to your site, but news coverage without a link will still provide something of a brand signal.
- Start planning your content calendar; think about what's unique about your products and create some content around it that you can then, hopefully, promote to earn links back to your site.
- Make sure you're behaving like a brand online in other ways. Build out your social media profiles, and start trying to build a following on e.g. Facebook and Twitter. With a highly visually-appealing product like chocolate, you might have success on Pinterest and Instagram. Make an effort to engage with your followers - don't just talk about yourself, but really start a conversation and respond when people talk to you. Having a robust, active social media presence sends search engines and users alike the signal that you are a real, reputable business. Claiming social media profiles under your brand name will also provide additional pages that use your brand name in conjunction with your business.
The good news is, all of these activities are worth doing to promote your business online anyway; the bad news is, they will probably take some time to really establish your brand. In the short term, it might be worth investing in some paid search ads to make sure your site shows up for your brand terms.

Hi Roman,
It looks like Bar & Cocoa is an online-only chocolate shop. (Virtual businesses should not optimize their websites for local search.)

jajajaja thank you james wolff I will take as a recognize

Let's define your problem into smaller pieces
1- bar & cocoa, or bar and cocoa
Stop words (a, the, of, for) are usually filtered out by Google in a search queryI will suggest to check this List of stop words
So we can asumme that you have a problem with the stop word, but I think this not your main problem.
Your main problem is, From Google perspective your website is not relevant for the search querys that you want to rank.1 - _Do you have an old url or website? if you have it a good idea make a redirection or Add cannonical Tag _Basically you will transffer the authorithy of your old domian to the new one.
_2 - Make Topic Research (Yeah, I'm talking about Topic not keyword) if you made a research you will notice that google classified __the keywords by topic. So if you are a bar in Denver research all the terms related such as: happy hours, special drinks, ect. _Choose the right keywords and start a link building campaign.
__3 - Add schema to your website. In this way Google will have a better understanding that you are a Bar or Restaurant in a Specific Location (The best way to add schema is json, you just need to add some code to your header)
Example 1
http://schema.org/RestaurantOn schemas you can add as many info as you can open hour, price range, geo location, description and so on
I will assume that you are registered on Google Small Business if not, now is the right moment.
Here are 2 list of business directories on USA, so is a good idea to register your website

Search engine keyword rank - easiest way to check the keywords that rank across website
What is the best keyword ranking tool you have used? I have used various tools by which I am expected to identify and input the keyword I want to track... However, recently I was introduced to Searchmetrics, which I think automatically pulls in the keywords a website ranks for, without the need for manual input from the SEO (I haven't used this tool yet, so apologies if I am incorrect!). Do any other rank trackers work like this? Thanks, Luke

Broken images & Rankings
Hi I have seen a big drop in a keyword going from position 3 to out of the top 100. The only thing I can see that went wrong, was an issue with broken images - could this be the reason for the drop? Becky

Articles marked with "This site may be hacked," but I have no security issues in the search console. What do I do?
There are a number of blog articles on my site that have started receiving the "This site may be hacked" warning in the SERP. I went hunting for security issues in the Search Console, but it indicated that my site is clean. In fact, the average position of some of the articles has increased over the last few weeks while the warning has been in place. The problem sounds very similar to this thread: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/webmasters/malware--hacked-sites/wmG4vEcr_l0 but that thread hasn't been touched since February. I'm fearful that the Google Form is no longer monitored. What other steps should I take? One query where I see the warning is "Brand Saturation" and this is the page that has the warning: http://brolik.com/blog/should-you-strive-for-brand-saturation-in-your-marketing-plan/

"Hot Desk" type office space to establish addresses in multiple locations
Hello Mozzers, I'm noticing increasing numbers of clients' competitors getting physical addresses and phone numbers in multiple locations, no doubt partly for SEO purposes. These are little more than ghost presences (in hot desk style office space) and the phone numbers are simply diverted. Do such physical addresses put them at an SEO advantage (over and above those who don't have hot desk style space and location phone numbers). Or does Google weed out hot desk type office spaces where they can? Your thoughts/experience would be very welcome! Thanks in advance, Luke

The "webmaster" disallowed all ROBOTS to fight spam! Help!!
One of the companies I do work for has a magento site. I am simply the SEO guy and they work the website through some developers who hold access to their systems VERY tightly. Using Google Webmaster Tools I saw that the robots.txt file was blocking ALL robots. I immediately e-mailed out and received a long reply about foreign robots and scrappers slowing down the website. They told me I would have to provide a list of only the good robots to allow in robots.txt. Please correct me if I'm wrong.. but isn't Robots.txt optional?? Won't a bad scrapper or bot still bog down the site? Shouldn't that be handled in httaccess or something different? I'm not new to SEO but I'm sure some of you who have been around longer have run into something like this and could provide some suggestions or resources I could use to plead my case! If I'm wrong.. please help me understand how we can meet both needs of allowing bots to visit the site but prevent the 'bad' ones. Their claim is the site is bombarded by tons and tons of bots that have slowed down performance. Thanks in advance for your help!

Brackets vs Encoded URLs: The "Same" in Google's eyes, or dup content?
Hello, This is the first time I've asked a question here, but I would really appreciate the advice of the community - thank you, thank you! Scenario: Internal linking is pointing to two different versions of a URL, one with brackets [] and the other version with the brackets encoded as %5B%5D Version 1: http://www.site.com/test?hello**[]=all&howdy[]=all&ciao[]=all
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | mirabile
Version 2: http://www.site.com/test?hello%5B%5D**=all&howdy**%5B%5D**=all&ciao**%5B%5D**=all Question: Will search engines view these as duplicate content? Technically there is a difference in characters, but it's only because one version encodes the brackets, and the other does not (See: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_urlencode.asp) We are asking the developer to encode ALL URLs because this seems cleaner but they are telling us that Google will see zero difference. We aren't sure if this is true, since engines can get so _hung up on even one single difference in character. _ We don't want to unnecessarily fracture the internal link structure of the site, so again - any feedback is welcome, thank you. 🙂0 -
Will changing a subdirectory name negatively effect local ranking?
We submitted a group of 50+ franchise stores into UBL to fulfill directory listings back in September. We are now looking at changing the some of the URL structure to include city names. Example: website.com/store/store-name(not city) to website.com/location/city-store-name Will changing the subdirectory and resubmitting to the directory aggregators negatively effect their search results? Thanks, Jake

Sudden drop in ranking for major search terms
Site bumpbabyandbeyond com au. Help! We have been operating for six years and had steadily built up our ranking for major terms like maternity clothes, maternity clothing, maternity wear, reaching highs of 6, 8 and 10 respectively for AU sites AU wide about six months ago that we have steadily maintained. All of a sudden we have dropped away. A week ago I noticed we had dropped from 6 to 12 for maternity clothes. This morning we are 21! I can't see any obvious reason for this, but believe the eCommerce module of our inventory/pos software has had a recent update - I'm awaiting answers on this. We haven't actively had anyone link building or working on SEO after being badly bitten and shelling out a small fortune for an AU company to do very little over six months - rankings improved rapidly when I sacked them and did some on page minor work myself. But I don't have the time or knowledge to look after the seo, and am on the hunt for reputable white hat assistance. Is there anything obviously wrong that I need to fix ASAP? Any help would be much appreciated 🙂
