How long until links kick in?
-
Hey,
We just got a bunch of great links on sites like TechCrunch and similar, but our SERP rankings and related remained unaffected. How long does it generally take for such links to "kick in" and help the website?
-
At 10:07pm tonight. Check then and you'll be first on SERP.
Obviously kidding, I have no certain idea just like the first two responses. Consider some of the other factors - sites that re-post the TechCrunch article, number of shares you get on Twitter, whether or not any of the linking sites get "news" status from Google. It's like studying an elementary particle... one thing in theory but they don't exist in isolation long enough to be sure in our reverse engineering of Google's thinking. With a surge of links from reputable sites, I'd expect a surge in rankings on some keywords within a couple days, with longer status near top if you continue to get referenced/links and a return to lower results if you don't.

I would first ask if the links you have obtained have been indexed yet by Google. Being on TechCrunch, I assume they have already been indexed. I have read here at SEOMoz that Google takes into account how long a link has been around. But that could be controversial, especially when Google is taking into account breaking news ranking algorithms such as what is hot on Facebook, Twitter, etc.
Another thought is whether or not your site has been continuously getting "a bunch of links" and that is your sites typical MO, but if not, Google might not like the big rush of links and have raised some flags about the sudden boost. To answer your question, no, I don't have an answer. But those are some things to think about while you troubleshoot the situation.

I find that this is completely variable and it varies from link to link.
Often, you will see a slight improvement in the short-term and then the website will continue to improve over time.
I have built a number of great links to sites in the past and it's been a couple of months before I've seen movement, but I've also seen a site move up considerably within 24 hours - there's no real way to tell how long it will take.

Effects of a bad link linking to a image
i am getting a lot of links from wallpapers sites.. One person has created 1000's of similar sites that are linking back to my images. My guess is images do not pass link value positive or negative. But I am not sure what the potential effects would be. Does anyone know who linking to images might effect SEO especially when there coming from horribly low quality auto generated sites.

Link over-building?
Hello all. One of the first things we do for our clients is to claim their local listings, include them on a set of selected directories (8-10), and blog directories (5), if applicable. Since they will all be linked to the client site, could doing all of this at once run us into problems with unnatural link growth? Thanks! Frank

What are the pros and cons of using a link builder? Can link building be outsourced?
Hi, I have great content on my website which I would like to build external links to from other websites. I am told this will increase my domain authority and ultimately help search engine ranking positions. I have very limited time in my hands and now thinking of outsourcing the link building component to a specialist. Is this a good way of doing it? Could you recommend professional link builders?

Paying to Remove Links?
I emailed a directory asking to have my link removed and they responded that it costs $20. Does anyone have experience paying to remove links? I would never do this on a mass scale, but for individual links is it worthwhile or a waste of money?

Links or Redirect?
My client's company has just acquired another company in the same industry and with that acquisition came two websites; companyname.com and companyname.co.uk. companyname.com has PA13 and DA10, companyname.co.uk has PA15 and DA10. At the moment, the two companies are to be run as separate companies but will become fully merged in time. My client's own website is brand new (PA1 and DA) and I'm wondering what is the best way to use these other two sites to improve my client's search ranking. Should I use the two sites to link to my client (these would be logical and natural links e.g. explaining the acquisition, under new management) or would it simply be better to redirect the domains to the new site? Many thanks

"gimme links" = easy to fill out profile/personal reputation links that offer a do-follow anchor text flexible link
I'm doing some SEO for small niche service sites...and aside from niche directories and some light article marketing and local search directories (yelp, etc) there really isn't a budget for content generation. I really only have a budget for profile/submission links. What are some sites where you can quite easily fill out a personal profile with an anchor text variable link that may not be THAT juicy but will stick (i.e. not a spam/fake profile type of link, but something like Linkedin). I'll start with giving away 1 www.istockphoto.com Any others that aren't obvious?

Links on the same keyword
When is linking from one particular keyword to much. At what point could link building from one keyword be considered spam and potentially delist a site ? Is it possible for a site to be delisted for having to many links from the same keyword ? Heard linking from the website name is more important following recent changes. I try and link from a selection of 3 to 4 keywords. Thanks for your help
