Link baiting tips, ideas, experiences, and lessons learned
-
Looking for tips, ideas, experiences, and lessons learned from other SEOs regarding link baiting. Our site is relatively new (launched in January) and would like to learn from others on baiting our content in ways which sites will link to us.
Thanks,
Shane

Ryan/Ken,
Thank you both for the great insight. We are working on our first infographic for our next blog post.
Cheers,

My experience has taught me a few things about linkbaiting...
The link bait world is a competitive one. Rolling something out that is so-so just won't cut it. Link bait has to be stunning in some way. Maybe I'm telling you something that is obvious, but in my experience, it really isn't to a lot of people. Figure out what is going to make people want to link to your linkbait (design, content, proprietary research, humor, etc.) and do everything you can to make that aspect of it outstanding.
I think a lot of linkbait campaigns try to do too much and in the end deliver a broad, but mediocre campaign. Rather than try to hit a grand slam (especially when you are new to this), depending on your experience and skill level, I recommend you do several campaigns each of which focuses on one thing and tries to do an outstanding job with that one thing. Yes, there are some marketers that can do more, but they typically have a lot of experience and knowledge gained through trial and error. Over time you'll be able to expand into bigger and more complex linkbait projects.
Share your linkbait with as many parties as you can prior to rolling it out to see if what you think is amazing really is. If you know any skilled designers or UX specialists, get them to take a look at your linkbait and give you feedback on the presentation and usability.
If you have any connections at major blogs / news portals, call in a favor to get your linkbait campaign off the ground.
What kind of following do you have on Twitter / Facebook? Do everything you can to build that following leading up to the launch of your linkbait so you can leverage your social network to help get the work out.
Finally, read Justin Briggs' post on How to Build Links with Infographics. It offers a lot of good advice around how to roll out linkbait campaigns - regardless of whether they are infographics or not.
I'm anxious to hear what others have to say...

HI Shane,
Interesting and unique content, or content with different spin on it. An infographic, see SEOMoz's inbound marketing graphic as an example. Write or design something that someone would want to read and pass on to their friends, coworkers, or customers depending on your business.
I attend a lot of networking events during the month, well seems like a lot to me anyway. I take notes on the questions that come up about tech, seo or real estate. My favoriites areas to write about. Then I compose a brief summary of the answer, with screen capture or graphics if I can, and post the link to the information on the group's forum. Hey - here is a summary on how to use the twitter hashtag and 3 reasons why you might use it. Just be helpful and it will come back to you.
Marketing Profs and Hubspot have some great resources on ideas on how to build or write content that others might like or link to.
I hope that helps.

Bit.ly links
I have used Moz to analyses where similar companies to mine have links from. One company has a huge amount of links from Bit.ly (2,704,721) and the domain authority of Bit.ly is 96, also with spam score of 0. This seems to be a great source of link building. My understanding of Bit.ly was that it shortened links. Does anyone know how this company has generated so many links from Bit.ly? Thanks!

Internal Link Building and Link Juice Quality
Hi There! I manage the website for a law office that covers many geographical locations. For very specific niche content, we would prefer to create one piece of content and link to the various geographic locations where we would handle that topic instead of posting multiple variations of the same content for each specific geographical area. If we put a button on these pages that has links to each location, will that have the same "link juice" effect to the pages we're linking that linking directly in the text would? (example: the Where can we help you? button on this page : http://www.zdfirm.com/volkswagen-recall/) Thank you!

Links I am not Building?
Hi All, I check webmaster multiple times on a daily basis, and I noticed some links that I have not worked on and look a bit spammy, is it possible for people to purposely pont bad links in my direction? If that is the case is there a way for me to remove them myself? Also the number of total backlinks are very different in Webmaster and my Open Site Explorer, is this normal? Thanks again !

Any ideas for linkbait?
Hi, I'm working on an account where we are optimizing SEO, SEA and Conversion. The business is a very local car rental company that competes with Hertz, Europcar, ... I already posted a question about it here http://www.seomoz.org/q/very-fluctuating-rankings The lack of time made it almost impossible for this business to start bloggin', but we're about to change that in 2012 and I already came up with some ideas for some articles, but still looking for that big fish that will get those good links. Maybe an infograph, but what data should we cover?

Removal of dodgy links
Examining the backlink profile of a new client I can see a large number of links developed by an offshore agency they used for link-building. The client is a reputable, professional company but some of the links are on very low-quality sites in-between viagra, online pharmacies, cosmetic surgery etc. It is unclear whether some of the links are paid or not. There is no indication that they have been penalised for these links but they are obviously unhelpful. Can I use GWT to request Google ignore them or should I just leave them and move on with more appropriate link building techniques?

Is Buying Links a good idea???
Hello Everyone, I want to know, what is the search engine's preference when it comes to links that have been bought. I observed that quite a few the good local directory listings (with good mozrank and moz trust etc) offer one to be listed for a yearly or lifetime price. Does Google frown upon these type of links too? regards, Talha

Are 36 links from one site to nested pages better than one link to the root domain?
I have a Driving School website www.1stclassdriving.co.uk. The site is structured geographically with 36 area pages, one

should I create 36 individual links to each area page? - which is most valuable?0
