Domain now being used for a different purpose (how to deal with previous links!)
-
I managed to snap up a domain last October that was previously being used by people to create online resumes.
On this domain I have created a site that allows businesses to have a short web address that they then use to send their customers to. This short address displays a list of review sites that the customers can choose from to leave a review on the business, ie GMB, Facebook (basically any established reviews site) etc.
The problem I have is that there are so many old links that are pointing to the site referencing the previous resume business and I have three issues:Many people blindly sign up thinking it’s the resume business because they read it on another site who’s link they followed.
The sites that list my domain are mainly job or resume related sites.
I have the previous business customers still with their personalised links leading back to the site that I currently 404.
The site in question is https://re.vu
Any assistance or advice would be gratefully received.

Thank you Darin I appreciate your answer and will look to put this in place.
Best wishes,
Dean

Not sure how many links are coming up as 404 errors but you could 301 the links to a central page that says basically that the resume/service in question is no longer available. I would make it a static page with no navigation and noindex it. There is some thought to just allowing the pages to 404 but if you have standard 404 page they could still sign up. If you had a custom 404 pages just for these links, you could exclude the navigation and just have a message there.
Depending on the number of links you may want to reach out to these sites to help them out by letting them know that you are no longer a resource for them. Its part of the link cleaning process you should be doing regularly anyway. Simple email that you can write once and just copy that says that the link they have is no longer helpful to their users etc.
I'd have to see the link profile to really get indepth with a recommendation but this may be a start.

Should you disavow links from good websites that mention your brand in a negative way
Hi, I have recently asked a client to download their disavow file and send it over for us to review. One thing that stood out is that they have disavowed URL's from really good/ trusted sites, just because they mention the client's product in a negative way. This isn't how I would use the disavow tool. Is this an abuse of the disavow tool, or is there a benefit to using it in such a way?

What hosting provider do you use? I think mine is letting down my SEO!
Hello I am curious to what hosting plans you are using, and what you would recommend. I am currently paying £30 per month for shared reseller hosting with tsohost and having problems every week with my most popular website (1-10k hits a day). website gets internal errors and intermittently goes extremely slow. I have about 10 sites in total most very small traffic. So just looking for something fast, good for WordPress sites and ideally good for migrating over onto. Please let me know your recommendations. My budget is £100 per month, ideally a little less. Thanks! Steven

Want to use Google Business Pages but Spam Reviews are putting me off
Not sure if I am missing something here...I have phoned and asked Google business how they deal with reviews which are potentially fake and damaging to a business reputation, it seems there is very little a small local business can do about them other than report the review with no guarantee of anyone helping ...Has anyone else had this issue as I would really like to use this service to assist with rankings on google? It is hard to convince (and to be honest I don't want to have to convince!) a local business that this is a good service at the same time as informing them they will more than likely have to spend extra time fending off fake reviews...Not seen any good answers anywhere else, ignoring the reviews, adding more positive reviews or replying/managing reviews are not an option. Hope someone can help with this, thanks

Has Anyone Ever Used Nearby Now App for SEO?
Hello Moz World, I was researching different ways to expand a client's SEO beyond his brick and mortar location. I listen to a webinar by Brightlocal on tactics I could use to help improve rankings. (Great Webinar, nothing really relevant till after the 30 minute mark). One of the host recommended an app called Nearby Now which will help a local service provider rank in multiple towns by allowing clients to provide a testimonial in realtime in the city that the service was provided and link it back to the website. I sat down with a customer service rep, and it sounds like its a great low cost solution for service providers to rank outside of their brick and mortar location. My question, Has anyone used it? Have you had a good experience? Can anyone recommend a better app? As always, thank you for your feedback and time. Best Regards, Will H.

Do search engines take into account the location of a sight with regards to links?
Hey everyone! I have a local company and I am just starting my link building campaign. I have a question in regards to how search engines work. If I want to receive web traffic from only the New York area would I want to receive links from sites located in Arizona, Utah or even England and Sweden? Assuming these sights are high in popularity and centered on the same content? Or would it be wiser for me to target smaller, local sights and blogs that are in the New York area? Thanks!

Using structured data for reviews - for negative or warnings.
We all use review markup today and we use it linearly as only a vote up or down. My question is around a site that will judge the negative impacts of given chemicals introduced into certain waterways. (Sorry, I must protect the client so I cannot give out all the info; I hope this is enough for a reasonable understanding.) Is there anyone who has ever used or is aware of any markup that does not result in a star? So, if we use the current system, we end up where a bad chemical gets a ton of single stars. In essence what we are measuring is degrees of Positive. With four stars there is no zero positive, but 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% (Ok unless it is aggregated). I want to be able to show degrees of negative and obviously stars would be confusing. So, have a symbol that connotes a negative (skull and crossbones, X, !!, etc.) and the more of these someone marks shows more displeasure or more danger. Are there any ideas for this or any occurrences already on the Internet you may be aware of? Preference would be to be able to at some point have search engines show them as snippets. Thanks to all you Mozzers, Robert

Domain Authority going up while ranking positions down. Something is missing...
Hi Moz Fans! Its the first time I try to ask the community something, usually I find the solution somewhere in this incredible place. But today I need some orientation with a complex problem. We have just launched a spanish Car Dealer Rating and Reviews website. Lets say there is a multibrand Car Dealer called "Autogira" so we need to aim two typical keywords query: "Autogira", "Autogira reviews". "Autogira" is the most important one because it means more than the 90%. Using On-Page Grader I found that the listing page for Autogira: "Autogira" = Grade A "Autogira reviews" = Grade C However I found my website well ranked for "Autogira reviews" (1 page) and not for "Autogira" (2-3 page). Competition is low for the two kind of keywords. Autogira and this examples have reviews and good photos so its good content, however there are lots of listings without reviews yet. Chronology: Nov 20 = Sitemap.xml sent through GWT Dic 26 = Domain Authority up to 10 Jan 16 = Google snippets installed Jan 17 = Domain Authority up to 12 Jan 30 = Domain Authority up to 18 Feb 3 = Growth trend changes and starts going down, coincide with a problem of duplication of urls that was fixed 2 days later. Keywords like "Autogira" starts fluctuating positions between 20-50 but "Autogira reviews" stay on 1-10. Feb 5 - Feb 26 = SEO improvements (more on page optimization, deduplication, canonalication...) How could I lost positions for "Autogira" and not for "Autogira reviews" when everything is better optimized for the first one? Is it normal to fluctuate weekly rank positions for the same keyword? Thank you all!
