Blogging for an ecommerce site
-
Hi There,
Where would you install the blog?
regards
-
I would always use, as Spencer has stated, .com/blog/ so you do not risk splitting the link juice.
-
It depends what you are going for here. It is typically recommended that you install the blog at mydomain.com/blog/ because it gives the link value to mydomain.com. This is the best option if you want your main domain to rank higher and for long tail search.
If you put it at blog.mydomain.com it will count as a subdomain and the link value will be split. This option can be beneficial if your main domain already ranks where you would like it to, or will be able to without the blog. Then you can use the blog to dominate rankings by having a first and second listing with the subdomain.
mydomainblog.com is not recommended as it is a completely separate domian and will have no synergy with your other doman.

I have an integrated blog on my website, but should I have another blog elsewhere? Like Blogger? Tumblr?
Is it a good or bad idea to have other blogs, for the same company??

Duplicate content on the same site
We have a client who wants us to use the same piece of copy twice on their website. Once to promote a workshop and once to promote a conference talk. We feel this would be bad practice from a user perspective, but we were wondering how search engines would regard this? Thanks Ian

Am I spreading my content & site thin?
I have a video section on my site. Basically I am filtering quality videos for my readers to check out. The videos are pretty much all embedded youtube/vimeo vids. There are a few categories, which are pretty niche-y in relation to my readers. In general they probably aren't seen as too relevant to the overall content on my site... Is it a mistake to keep these videos up? Could they be messing up my rankings since they aren't necessarily in line with the rest of the content on my site?

Sub directory vs sub domain for company blog
My company's blog is currently a sub directory - www.site/blog.com but for technical ease we are considering changing it to a sub domain - www.blog.site.com. What are the SEO ramifications of each? Thank you! Best, Sara

Archiving old blog posts - yea or nay?
I'm building up my personal website. When I moved from my old domain to my current one a few years ago, I had moved a folder with all my old blog posts (from an old blogger.com account) to an archives called /blog/. It's bad enough the entries just text and nearly all the images aren't there but because of the way I moved over the posts, I have 200+ duplicate page titles with no meta descriptions. Is it worth saving these posts ? (putting them into an archives.mysite.com sub-domain?) I already have the folder disallowed in my robotos.txt file and there's nothing really incredible content-wise in the archives, though they are some of the oldest pages on my current (3 years old) domain. There's no real SEO thought in them as this was just a fun personal blog at the time. Thoughts?

For a consumer facing blog, how often do you recommend updating content to develop good rankings? I understand that it's really dependent upon the niche/competition, but what are some best practices? Content is expensive. Thanks
