ECommerce Platform Change

I'm just entering the process of switching web developer companies, and I was wondering what process would be best for redirecting our old product (new and used cars) pages. Our current design leaves much to be desired seo wise (http://www.resslermotors.com/index.asp?cmd=detail&vin=1FTSX30F3XEC01446&stocknumber=123911&sg=ocor5h42d2yhkla&Make=Ford&parCertifiedFlag=&Model=&parVehTypeID=&p=6&page=1), and redirecting all of them seems like it would be pretty complicated.
In addition to that, we currently have 35,000 pages. Is there a practical way to do redirects with this many pages?

Buy a magento car theme at template monster. Or buy one on Magento Connect.
On magento connect, you will have to do a lot of digging around. The themes are already set so you just have to get familiar with it and change the pics

Understandable, that it would cause worries. I've only been with this company for about 8 months, and walked into a terrible platform. Sadly, every automotive website provider I talk to has their system that they use, and I'm stuck trying to find both the best ecommerce platform, as well as overall site build.
-
Ressler! Sorry man, that raises a red flag for me. I wouldn't use a company who has built their own software because then you are stuck with them. You may be limiting yourself to what their CMS can provide. There are many of these companies out there whose code is outdated and functionality subpar. I am biased toward Magento as you can tell by my username. It's open source while the company you are looking to switch to is custom (built their own).
-
I'm switching to a different company that supposedly has built their own. I'm currently using Seritas, and I'm switching to TK Carsites. The current company uses a jumbled mess, while the new company designs it with keywords in mind.

There's probably a number of ways to do it, some more manual than others.
Get a developer to export a list of product numbers (if they are unique) and urls from the DB of the old and new CMS. Use excel and match em up (vlookup is a good function for that), create the htaccess redirects (=CONCATENATE is a good function for that) and whaaalaaa.
If programming resources are short, you may need to use a scraper (ie. mozenda) to get the info. Or, just pick the most valuable revenue entreating pages (export from Google Analytics if you have that setup) and manually write redirects. Not recommended but better than nothing!
Err, so many options, lol. And definitely switch to Magento. It rocks!

Check to see if you have a feature in your ecommerce platform where you can import and export information. I use magento and there's a feature called Import Export. I haven't used it in about 3 years so I'm sure I'm forgetting. But you should be able to export everything (product/stock/customer info) to excel. I don't know about the URLs though. Maybe you can run a sitemap report and 301 those URLs.

If the URLs are going to be changing (and hopefully optimized) then 301 redirects are the way to go. What platform are you changing from / to? What kind of server will it be hosted on?

Ecommerce Preferred URL Structure for Printing Website
Hello Mozers! We are adding an ecommerce functionality to our existing website.
Technical SEO | | CheapyPP
Our company offers a wide range of commercial printing and mail services. We have done a pretty good job over the years in building content both in terms of our print offerings and blog section highlighting those offerings. We have finally bit the bullet and have decided to add end-to end ecommerce functionality. Users will be able to price, pay, upload and order thru our website. My question to the community becomes which sub folder do we use?
The ecommerce functionality is a third part software and needs to sit in a sub folder and we can't seem to find a good fit. Most of our content pages for print items are something like this www.website/printing/ - pillar page examples of url structure for sub pages www.website/printing/flyer-printing/
www.website/printing/booklet-printing/
www.website/printing/door-hangers/
www.website/printing/business-cards/ Options would be order-printing/ or prints/ So we we thinking /orders/ would be the best but not certain and wanted some feedback from the community. If we did go this route the url structure would be: order/business-cards this would be the default econ page order/business-cards/full-uv-coaing-both-sides individual product page What are your thoughts? Duplicate content issue on Magento platform
We have a lot of duplicate pages (600 urls) on our site (total urls 800) built on the Magento e-commerce platform. We have the same products in a number of different categories that make it easy for people to choose which product suits their needs. If we enable the canonical fix in Magento will it dramatically reduce the number of pages that are indexed. Surely with more pages indexed (even though they are duplicates) we get more search results visibility. I'm new to this particular SEO issue. What do the SEO community have to say on this matter. Do we go ahead with the canonical fix or leave it?

Should we change the publish date in WordPress when updating a post?
Hi everyone, We're going through some of our old posts in our WordPress blog and updating them, adding new information, new links, and photos. My question: If we update the posts significantly, should we also update the "published" date to today? If we only correct some typos or a dead link, we don't touch the date. However, if we've done some real work on the post, we'd like to update the published date in order to bring it to the top of our blog feed and draw new attention to the post. However, I'm a little nervous that this could be seen by Google as spammy, as it's not technically a new post and the URL already exists in Google's index of our site. Here's an example of a post that was published several years ago and then updated a few week's ago with new information (and a new date stamp): http://www.eurocheapo.com/blog/barcelona-tip-five-cheap-eats-under-e6.html Any thoughts on this? Thanks, Tom

No Access to change duplicate product title and meta tags!?
I have a client who's website contains a php file to dynamically call a product xml file from an external source. I asked the web dev company if there was any way to access or change the titles and meta descriptions to be unique for each product and they said no, not with their system. With about 63 product pages is this going to hurt me trying to get him ranked locally? What is the best to handle a situation like this?

IBM Websphere Commerce - Good Platform Or Not?
I have recently started working with a fairly large company that is rethinking their web paltform. Currently they use IBM Websphere Commerce, but I'm finding a lot of limitations with it as far as SEO, content managment etc., it seems that the simplest things take a lot of resources and time. On top of that, IT has had developed other modules that integrate with it to make it do what it needs to do, so we are using multiple systems. The question we are evaluating is if Websphere is capable of providing what we need and just needs developed and implemented, or is in a platform that is not friendly for our needs? It may be easy to say to scrap it and move on, but everyone knows how difficult it is to change platforms, especially for a multi million dollar company that is doing a lot of business. So if the current system is capable, we want to make use of it, but we're not sure if it is even capable. Has anyone had direct experience with this platform?

ECommerce site - Duplicate pages problem.
We have an eCommerce site with multiple products being displayed on a number of pages. We use rel="next" and rel="prev" and have a display ALL which I understand Google should automatically be able to find. Should we also being using a Canonical tag as well to tell google to give authority to the first page or the All Pages. Or was the use of the next and prev rel tags that we currently do adequate. We currently display 20 products per page, we were thinking of increasing this to make fewer pages but they would be better as this which would make some later product pages redundant . If we add 301 redirects on the redundant pages, does anyone know of the sort of impact this might cause to traffic and seo ?. General thoughts if anyone has similar problems welcome
