Issues with google places.
-
Hey there!
A few weeks ago I made some changes to my client's "google places page". I am facing two issues there which I could not resolve on my own, they are:
- After I made changes and updated the page I could not see any activity on the analytics section whereas before I updated the page there was some metrics visible.
- The client had already claimed his places page before he came to me and entered some information. He just stuffed some keywords in the description section. I made necessary changes to the description based on the best practices for places page and according to Google's guideline for creating a great listing. The problem is the category did not update on the places page that show up in SERPs(it ranks top for four major keywords with geo indicators). However, the changes I made does appear when on the lower left side when I login into my places page.
I don't see any link that will let me edit "description". Am I confusing some other section with category?
I have tried to be as lucid as possible.
I will appreciate any help.
Thanks for your time.

You won't see the change right away. Google will take a bit to get it in. From Google:
** Updates to existing listings, including the removal of photos or entire listings can also take up to two weeks. .**
The phone change is causing your problem and you need to request that you get reverified. From google Places:
Note that if you edit your business name, address, or phone number, you'll need to verify again before these changes can go live.
Just go in and reverify and you should get all. If you get the PIN in quickly, you should be up within 24 hours of getting it in.
Good Luck

Description is available to change and I do see the change on the bottom right when I login on my places page.(IMAGE2 is what I see). However after I make these changes and press "submit" , I open another tab and open google dot com, search with my target keyword, my place page appears on top for "places near", I click on the "place page" link and go to my, well, place page and I don't see any changes to category there.
What I see is IMAGE1 (red circle just below categories).
I didn't change anything but the phone number, I switched the "phone" and "mobile". And no, I can't retrieve any data at all.
thanks.

OK for the description, click on the box where the description is and it will be available to change.
As to data, can you retrieve any at all? Say from the year before?
Did you change anything with location, business name, address, phone, etc?

Thanks for the swift response Robert,
Here are larger images, hope you can see them properly.
IMAGE1:http://www.hukamievent.com/images/places page on SERP.jpg
IMAGE2:http://www.hukamievent.com/images/edit places page.jpg
IMAGE3:http://www.hukamievent.com/images/logged in places page.jpg
IMAGE1 shows what I want to change but cannot.
IMAGE2 shows the description category.it doesn't have any field that will let me edit the content in IMAGE1.
IMAGE3 shows google places page dashboard that shows no activity.
Is this as strange to everyone else as it is to me or I am unknowingly ignoring something that's very obvious?

Unfortunately, I am having a problem with Imgur and cannot process url for some reason. Here is link to my image.
It appears there is an issue in that you have changed something other than category and description. This has resulted in the need for a new PIN. Because the images you show are snippets it is hard to tell what is up.
In my image from link above, you will notice one business still requires a PIN and has nothing to the right. the others have analytics to the right. IF you are not showing analytics, you likely have a need for a new PIN.
When you made changes did you change the account to you from the business owner? If you make any changes like that, or address, or phone, etc. It will require a new PIN.
Hope this helps, (If you can show larger image of page, we can likely assist).

Negative SEO with Google Images
We have a client in the heavy equipment industry that is trying to "push down" images in a Google image search that are associated with an accident over ten years ago. This client has launched a new website, and we have applied the best practices of on-page SEO (page titles, unique meta-descriptions, alt-image tags, focused keyword targeting, etc.). The challenge we have is with Google Image results. It seems the image results shown in the Google Image search rankings are often not inline with how images have been labeled in the alt-tag section. I have checked these images with the Moz Chrome extension, and I have often found the way the image is labeled in the alt-tag is not related to the search query made within the Google image search bar. I certainly may not be factoring in other weighted items when it comes to how images are ranked. Are there other ranking factors associated with Google Image results outside of the Alt-Image Tag? If so, what are those factors? Our ultimate goal is to provide a strategy that would allow us to tag images within this specific sector that are relevant to this specific heavy equipment product, and at the same time, "push down" the rankings of the images that have a negative association to them. We certainly want to take the right approach here, and want to earn these rankings. However, the way Google ranks images seems to be a mystery of sorts. Is there a specific strategy relevant to Google Image rankings that would fall inline with the challenge listed above? I appreciate any advice on this topic. Thank you.

Viral SlideShare = Google Penalty?
We recently published a slideshow on SlideShare.net and it ended up doing pretty well. It was featured on their homepage for 3 days, and we got quite a few embeds. Unfortunately, a few days later, our rankings in Google tumbled. I'm wondering if this killed our link velocity, which I suppose would have potentially got us a temporary, automated penalty? If you look at slide #4 and beyond, you'll notice that the logo links back to our homepage, and there's also a "View Quote" button that navigates to that specific quote, so users can find out more information, share it, or view any associated pictures. So, in total, there are quite a few backlinks in that slideshow (88 to be exact). Is this what likely caused our drop in rankings? Or is it more likely to be a coincidence? We haven't done anything else in the past couple of months, other than publish an infographic and a press release. And if this is a problem, how would we fix it? I can edit the slideshare and remove some of the links... but it seems sort of silly considering we haven't done anything blackhat. And, it would actually devalue our slideshow, because users would no longer be able to click through to the quotes. Thoughts?

How can we boost our rankings in a London-based Google search?
Hi all, I work for enterprise app development & mobile consultancy, Mubaloo. We tend to rank fairly well on Google for our targeted keywords in the Bristol area but not as well in London. Obviously there is more competition in London but that aside, we still don't rank brilliantly. We use our London address as our main address on our website, same for our London telephone number. Both of our offices are submitted to Google Maps and we include blog content with London and Bristol in the headers. Our main HQ is in Bristol but the London office is growing. What are the ways we can improve our rankings from a London-based Google search? Thank you in advance!

Google Place Result taking over Organic Search Result
Hey there, One of our client contacted as stating that their Google ranking dropped. It was originally listed No.2 on the organic search result, but now it shows up only as Google Place instead, and the ranking is lower than before. Apparently it happens in Japan quite often nowadays, does it happen in your country too? Especially on Google.com? Is it becoming a trend?

Does google places mind listing cities on the home page
Hello, A site in our industry is listing a bunch of cities on their home page and ranking for them. Like "Our dog training facility provides services to dogs in city1,city2,city3,city4,city5,city6 state" where the cities and states are relatively in their area. It's working organically, will this confuse google places? Thanks!

Google places: how to deal when competitors spam?
My competitors are spamming in google places, how do I report them? following are a few examples of how they are spamming: Some of them are not local businesses, they somehow managed to get a number and some random address. Some of them have keywords as company names, their exact company name doesn't have any keywords. Some of them have multiple places pages with keywords as company names. how does one deal with it?

Google Shopping in SERPS - What % of clicks do they get?
Howdy, Looking for any data we can get on the % of click through the shopping results are getting in Google SERPs. There are tons of variables: how many products & which position the shopping feeds and images are shown in but any hard data would be helpful. The background is that we have a client who ranks #1 in Google for a shopping related term and their organic traffic is down in 2011 for this main keyword which has ranked #1 all year since the shopping feeds are continually showing above or below the 1st Google position vs sporadic or no display in years prior. I.e. They aren't happy the traffic is down & we are looking for some data we can provide them with beyond, "Google shopping is now eating part of your organic traffic for that term". Many thanks in advance!!
