Question on keyword rankings
-
Hi everyone
Within our campaign it says that we rank number 35 for a specific keyword in Google in the Unites States but when we google the specific keyword we come up as number two on the first page.
Can you help me understand what the current rank is based on as well as how it's results can be different from our Google search?
Thank you.

Good morning Cyrus
Thank you for taking the time and answering my question. I also read your article, very informative. Thank you for sharing however I do have a follow up question.
I completely understand what you mean when you say there is no longer anything such as rank but when I do a search on Google and we are number 1 or 2 for a specific keyword and SEOMOZ shows that we rank number 35 there is a big difference and was wondering what can attribute to the big difference. Is there something that SEOMOZ takes into effect that we can replicate when we do a Google search to achieve similar results?
The reason I ask is so that we can see what impacts the results and best optimize our website.
Thanks again for all your help, feedback and sharing of information.

This goes to show that there is no longer anything such as "rank"
Over the past couple of years it's gotten to the point that no two people ever see the same result, even unpersonalized, so we tend to think in terms of "average position"
The SEOmoz PRO platform takes great pains not only to
- Depersonalize results but also to
- Display non-localize results.
It's important to do both. The best way to estimate your rank is still to add &pws=0 to the end of your search query. To non-localize it, set your location (left hand side of Google's results page) to the county you reside in. For the US this would be "United States".
I wrote a post on this here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/google-personalized-search
Regardless, hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO.

Tried it but it's not compatible with the latest Firefox
Also not sure if you seen my response earlier but I tried a proxy IP from New York using Google.com and the results were different then what is posted on SEOMOZ. What do you think could be the issue there?
What location in the United States is SEOMOZ basing it's keyword ranking on and if that is different then Google own's ranking how can we truly optimize keywords without knowing how SEOMOZ results are different from Google's own results ?
If the results are truly different then is the only way to tell is to look up each keyword in Google and not in SEOMOZ?

As far as I know depending on where you are searching from google shows different results. So for example:
I run a search from the UK with Google.co.uk and my keyword comes up in position 4
I run the same search from the UK with Google.com and my keyword now appears in position 13
Obviously Google takes a lot into consideration when showing rankings but two things that come into play are your location running the search and the location of the server that hosts your site.
The best way to get the most accurate result is to run a search in Google as if you are in the country that you want the result for. So if you want to know the position of your keyword in Google.co.uk as if you are based in the UK do this.
There is a plugin for Google Chrome which allows you to select a country from a list and get back results as if you where in that country running the search:

Hope this helps

I just used a proxy site to make sure I am searching Google within the United States and we actually ranked number one for the keyword using Google search with a proxy server that has a New York IP address.
This is very weird results.
Marisa would be nice if a SEOMOZ team member would come and explain this to us so we can fully understand what the results are and how we can understand them to effectively utilize them.

Yeah, you know, I just looked at my campaign, and it has us ranked number 17 for a keyword when we're actually 11. So, maybe someone else can answer this! Now I'd like to know!
I do know that Google has different servers it uses in different parts of the country and depending on which one they are using at any given time, the SERPs can be different. But the fluctuation is usually only a couple of spaces--nothing like what we're experiencing.
-
Yes Tony I agree the results are still the same in private and non private browsing in terms of the results for a specific keyword on Google.
-
Hi Marisa,
Thanks for the reply but no joy I'm afraid. The SERPs are still the same.
-
Google is probably giving you personalized results. Make sure you are not logged in. Also, even if you're not, you may still be getting personalized results based on location and other factors. The only way to avoid this that I know of is in Firefox, go to Tools > Start Private Browsing and then do your search. Just make sure to go back and exit private browsing when you're done.

How do I use Google Keyword in onsite seo?
Hello to all, I wanted to ask if I am doing this correctly. So I own a Bernese mountain dog website I used the google keyword research tools to view keyword ideas. I listed my results below. So my questions are: 1 - Bernese Mountain Dog Puppies (the keyword) blow away the other keywords. So when you are looking at your sites most popular keywords, do you make the most popular keyword your homepage? Because it gets the most link juice? Like would you build the homepage around the best keyword instead of branding - like the company name etc? Or does it matter? Basically just as long as you use it for one page? 2 - When you have keywords that have parts of other keywords, is it safe to use the longer keyword because it has parts of the other phrases? Such as Bernese mountain dog puppies for sale is a part of Bernese mountain dog puppies for sale in Colorado. So if you use bernese mountain dog puppies for sale in Colorado, it will also hit the bernese mountain dog puppies for sale? ( without the In Colorado) What type of strategy would you use for this type of situation? 3- Lastly, and thank you for your time - I watched a video from a grey hat seo guy. He said to take a keyword or phrase like say Colorado home builders, create a page like example.com/Colorado-home-builders/ Then make you h1 tag - The Best Colorado Home Builders Add The Best Colorado home builders to your meta description and one more time in your h2 tag Then create a Bold, and italic The Best Colorado Home Builders in your unique content paragraphs. So my question is - is this grey hat and bad? Or the standard? I do not want to get hit for over optimizing. So just wanted to ask you opinion first. In the end, I truly thank you for taking the time to read my questions. I appreciate everyone's help and greatly appreciate your knowledge. So my results look like this | bernese mountain dog puppies | 590 | Low | $0.45 | 1% | |
Keyword Research | | Berner
| bernese mountain dog puppies for sale | 90 | High | $0.42 | 9% | |
| bernese mountain dogs | 90 | Low | $0.37 | 0% | |
| bernese mountain dog puppies for sale in colorado | 30 | Medium | $0.76 | 0% | |
| bernese mountain dog breeders in colorado | 20 | Medium | $0.32 | 0% | |
| bernese mountain dogs colorado | 40 | Low | $0.08 | 0% | |

Few questions about panda and penguin
I seem to be a little confused about how SEO has changed recently and what things should be avoided even though I am still seeing these things impacted on my site. The recent panda and penguin updates have scared many of us SEO'ers into thinking that keyword optimization is now a no-no as apposed to how it used to be necessary. Let me explain Concerning keyword optimization in the past in SEO we would practice placing keywords into our pages to make sure we are properly optimizing for such keywords. For instance bolding keywords, placing them in content, titles and descriptions. With panda Google seems to be negativly impacting the use of over optimization with keywods and it is what is preached about on most SEO blogs now, but I have been experimenting with such things with my sites and have noticed a few things. Before the panda update I used to rank with my main site on a particular keyword in second place. While the panda update effected me negatively with ranking it was not so much the ranking that hurt me as apposed to the adsense revenue. I used to place consistently second place with my keyword, since panda I have dropped on average to 4th - 7th place, almost changing daily. The ranking was not so much a drop but the adsense revenue difference a month is about 2,000 which did impact me. Since then I have been going over panda rules and making the appropriate changes like getting rid of low quality content, to many keywords, ad placement. I am one who likes to experiment all the time so there are a few things that I have discovered with my diligence. I have noticed that when I cross a threshhold of about 5 repeated keywords on a page I am safe, when I begin to add more than 5 I start to notice a drop in ranking. If I go back to 5 and under I tend to rank back up. As well with that I have noticed that the placement of the keywords also impacts my ranking. When I place keywords more spread out over my page I see better rankings, if I tend to optimize my keyword more on the top portion of my page I see a drop in ranking. My question is even though keyword optimization is considered a no-no I still see that it will impact my rankings greatly. Since everything I read kind of goes against this I am wanting to hear your opinions about this. Another issue is relative content and the amount of pages/articles. It seems that to many pages or articles will flag you as a spam site. Now the idea of less is more is the practice we see. If this is the case then what I am questioning is how is it that google can determine a sites quality based on less. With less to use, google would have to have some serious and definitive triggers to determine the quality of the site. Can one simple page really change your ranking that much? How in the world does google determine the quality with just a few pages as apposed to many? My site freescrabbledictionary.com (and no I am not back linking right now :)) I am a scrabble based site that helps users find words and definitions for scrabble games and other word games. On some of my pages I have articles/pages which give users important info like 2 letter words, high scoring words and other stuff. When I show these words I place a link on every word to my dictionary portion so users can easily click the link and look up the word and its definition. Some of these pages show over a thousand words, so yes I have a thousand links on that page to other pages on my site. I want to keep this feature so users don't have to type in the word to look it up, but I am torn as to if this is hurting me as apposed to helping. I would love some info on this please.

Stop List and Keywords
I've came across a suggested list of words that google will ignore in your content, if this is correct and one of our main keywords is one of those words, will it lose effectiveness? We are trying to get #1 SERP for "Self Tan" and it seems "Self" is one of the words ignored - so should we just be focusing on Tan? Any tips / advice would be great!
