Fresh set of eyes on this page please. Why isn't it ranking?
-
Morning all, I'd really appreciate it if you could take a quick look at this page and see if I'm missing something here.
The targeted keyword (wedding favours) is pretty competitive and the rank had been slowly improving until recently and we've now slipped to 25th on Google UK. I've added a "Pay with a tweet" button for our eBook which has been pretty well received (around 100 downloads) so far so the social side is better than our competition.
I've also written a few guest blogs with links back to the page from a variety of sources.
Here is the page analysis on OSE.
If you could take a quick look and let me know if I'm missing anything here, it would be most appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

Hi Brendan,
Are you still having difficulties with this thread or have we managed to solve the issue you've been having?
-
I don't think having a subdomain is a problem in itself, but the problem is that the internal URLs are relative and so is the canonical link, and if someone gets a shop URL and removes shop or replaces it with www or a browser mishandles it, then you will end up with people getting 404 errors.
At the very least, whatever is handling the www side, if it gets a shop URL, it should 301 to the shop.
Whatever it was that Ben and I drank, it isn't good for us.
Favours it is.
Your H1 has spurious whitespace:
<h1> Wedding Favoursh1>
-
Personally I don't see a problem with the shop being on a sub-domain if I'm honest, long as you have good pages on /www.confetti.co.uk with a logical heading structure and good keyword usage in the page then it should be fine.
-
Thanks for the replies guys. Unless I'm going crazy here, the H1 tag is for wedding favours and not wedding flowers.
I take your point about the canonical link. Unfortunately this is an issue with our CMS which I'm looking to resolve shortly. Do you think that could be one reason for the ranking?
I also completely agree with you on the sub domain issue. It's something I want to resolve in the long term but in the short term, it's not really an option I'm afraid.
Thanks again guys.

Good answer Alan. Sadly I posted a reply before going to work and didn't have much time for a really in-depth look so I provided (what I thought) was a good on-page starting point.
I agree with your comments and would say this is probably another good reason for the poor rankings.
-
Brendan,
yes, what Ben said, plus, if you want to rank for wedding favours, then not having it in the H1 isn't helping you.
You are #15 for Wedding Flowers - which is most important to you?
Your Canonical tag is relative, which is allowed, but an absolute path leaves no room for misinterpretation.
Plus, you have a big problem:
You have shop.website and www.website and if you try the www version of that URL you get a page not found, so you are throwing away traffic.
Your system needs to be smart enough to realise that is a shop URL and do a 301 redirect.
- and this is the reason you really need the canonical URl to be absolute.
-
One thing I would say is that the on-page seo could be improved. Your main heading
is "Wedding Flowers" and there are no h2 tags on the page. I would recommend that you use
tags for the products like
Favour Bags
or
Seed Wedding Favours
that will give google a bit more to play with.
You might want to add a 2-3 line description of what the products are to entice people to click through to view the product page, this would allow you to potentially bold keywords or at least provide more textual content for search engines to use to rank that page.
You can add more keywords into the title and alt text of the images, but its good to see you're using the alt and title tags, most people forget that!

Link juice - What could be the reason for our bad internal page Page Authority
So OK we have a domain authority currently of 41, we are well established but unfortunately we don't have any pages with PA. I have a fair idea of why this is the case but want to get some other opinions before I form my strategy. 1.It appears our internal link structure is not great and is not very organised 2. It appears we have 58 links going externally on some pages. Some of these external links are social media icons in the footer which are followed. Is there any other factors I should be aware of when building PA on some of my inner pages. Any Thoughts would be appreciated.

Having some problems with understanding how to properly use anchor text for my keywords' better rankings. Please help!
Hello, Last week I did some work on my website's inner pages linking and some of my highly ranking keywords fell down as a result. I guess I did something wrong, please help me figure out what exactly was wrong! Here is the example of what I did. I put a link to the page that ranks for 'Thermador repair Brentwood' here: http://www.ifixappliancesla.com/blog/2016/09/12/appliance-repair-brentwood/ I put exactly same anchor text, 'Thermador repair Brentwood'. For my blog posts, I use Yoast plugin, so when adding the link, I received the message "You are linking to another page with the focus word you want this page rank for. Consider changing that if you truly want this page to rank." While this one's ranking, 'Thermador repair Brentwood', didn't fall down, others did. Could you please confirm if my understanding is right and I'd better not use the same keywords on two or more pages? If yes, what is the best practice for linking to the pages that are not in the main menu? Let's say, I decided to do blog posts for the areas my appliance repair company serves and to optimize those pages for respective keywords. So, I have pages like "Appliance Repair Service in Brentwood" (which is optimized for "appliance repair brentwood" keyword), "Appliance Repair Service in Beverly Hills" ("appliance repair beverly hills" keyword), etc. I thought that the best way to link to them is to put the same anchor texts: "appliance repair beverly hills", etc. But it looks like the best way would be to use the anchor texts like "Beverly Hills", "appliance servicemen in Beverly Hills". Please tell me if I am right? Any explanation, advise or referral would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Link to page in SERP or page with good on-page optimisation
Hi, Some friends are happy to link to my site. As I am focusing on a particular search term is it best to have them link to the page that already appears in the SERP for that term or the one with better on page optimisation? Thanks Billy

Major Dip in Keyword Rank - Why?
Last week my ranking for "keyword A" was relatively high at 16. Since then it's dropped a staggering 31 spots. It's certainly the most important keyword we can rank for so seeing it go -31 spots is rather frightening. I have a couple of theories: We haven't included it in our blog content as anchor text but once in the past 2 or so weeks since the last crawl was done by moz on oct. 21. The lack of recent links with the anchor text of "keyword A" pointing back to the blog is causing it to lose it's rapport. I've been adding most of our blog posts to Reddit and we've been getting almost double the traffic from Reddit alone. But with that comes a much higher bounce rate (~80%). Could posting and having visitors bounce from our blog posts cause the ranking to go down? I would love to get your thoughts on this issue. Thanks,

Transfering Page Rank to internal pages.
Hi there, I have a website with page rank 6 on its home page. I was wondering how, and which could be the best way to pass this ranking to all internal pages. Is there a way?

Moving off page blog to on page blog
Hi, I was using free wordpress blog and i have around 18-20 content on the blog. Now, we've managed to have blog on our main website which has www.mysite.com/blog extension. We did this so we could create more links on the website/ I am a little unsure how to move the blog now. Should we copy & paste the blog articles from old blog to new one and remove them from old blog? I am just not quite sure how would it effect the links. If i keep the old articles on the old blog and create new articles for the new one, it'll take me a while before i get them written. Any recommendation appreciated. Thanks

Looking for Feedback on Rankings Dropping
Hi, I am looking for some guidance on figuring out a problem I am having with one of my clients. Their site is http://www.macton.com. They have seen a pretty significant drop in rankings for "hoist systems" "industrial turntables" and "railroad equipment." Below is my analysis and thoughts. Please let me know if you have any input you can provide me with. Hoist Systems Rankings started dropping significantly July 2nd. Their average position was around the 2nd - 3rd page. They're now in position 100. Some things I noticed is that Google is now ranking the page /freight_rail/portable-car-hoist-freight for this term, whereas a few months ago it was ranking /rail_equipment/car-hoist. I'm not sure why Google has started to rank this new page for this term when there is no reference to that keyword in the page and the other one is better suited. Industrial Turntables Rankings started dropping off in January and they have been up and down and even fell off for a bit in March. They took a deep dive May 28 - Jun 11 and are slowly picking up. I noticed that Google is also changing which page it is choosing to rank for this term. Currently it is ranking /rail_equipment/locomotive-turntables, previously it was ranking the homepage around May 28th, and before that it was /equipment/industrial-testing. Some things we thought would help this was to create a whole new page just on industrial turntables in order to rank better for this term. Another thing that I think would be highly beneficial is to do some more aggressive link building. Their top anchor text is all brand related, and very few include their target keywords. To my knowledge, I don't think they have a penguin issue, although I could be mistaken. Can anyone provide input and/or guidance on my analysis? Any suggestions?

Natural Link Profile - Ranking Signal?
Hi, Is a natural link profile a ranking signal? What is the value in a natural link profile? What is a (natural?) link graph? Is Majestic SEO the only company capable of visualizing a link graph? (I know the answers to these questions but I want to hear what SEOMoz has to say in the quasi-official standards of SEOMoz Q/A) Regards,
