How does Google look at strings added to a URL
-
For example:
http://localhost:3000/en-US/app/a-knsmtrhqrqs/personal
where knsmtrhqrqs is a string
Can Google tell this is a string and what's their policy? Will it hurt rankings?
Thank you.

What we're trying to accomplish is to have a non-sequential string for secure applications without a user login (due to business reasons). The string is a unique identifier for a specific application in our system, and will always point at the same form.
-
Well, if it's a static URL that won't change and always renders the same content - it's still below optimal. What could a search engine, less a user understand from that URL? (I realize you're working on a local build.)
If it doesn't always render the same content, or the same content can be rendered by a different string - you're headed into duplicate content, big time. One could possibly set a canonical, but I tend to hope in one hand.
It sounds like you're going to run into crawl problems, backlink problems and a mess of other things.
Could you give me a little more background about what you're trying to accomplish? I'm pretty sure The Googles could tell if/when content is generated in a programmatic way. I'm also pretty sure The Googles wouldn't like it.
(Seriously, how much was I derping in the first sentence?)

I don't think they look at them negatively, but it will dilute your overall keyword in the url ranking. Also it might get you some weird classifications for your pages too. Like say that your string on one page happened to be the model number of some product, or a mpn of a product. It might make that page rank for something totally un-intended.

Why Is Google Showing My Images Upside Down in the Index?
Hi, My client has PDFs of their catalog on the site which google is indexing. However, it seems that google is taking an image from the catalog and then showing it upside in the index for images/search results. The images are not upside down on the site. Has anyone heard of this happening before or does anyone know a way to fix it? Thanks

Does google prefer expanded text to text that you have to mouse over to show?
Does a long scrolling page of text perform better than a page that has the content in sections that have to be moused over to be seen? Are there any articles or research on this?

301 forwarding during site migration problem - several url versions of the same page....
Hello, I'm migrating from an old site to a new site, and 301 forwarding many of the pages... My key problem is this I'm seeing www.website.com/ indexed in SE and www.website.com/default.aspx in showing as URL when I'm on homepage - should I simply 301 forward both of these? Then for several internal pages there are 2/3 versions of each page indexed. Canonicalization issues. Again, I'm wondering whether I should 301 forward each URL even if there are several different indexed URLs for the same page? Your advice will be welcome! Thanks in advance - Luke

Can you use a base element and mod_rewrite to alleviate the need for absolute URLs?
This is a follow up question to Scott Parsons' question about using absolute versus relative URLs when linking internally. Andy King makes the statement that this can be done and that it saves additional space (which he claims then can improve page speed). Is this a true and accurate statement? Can using a base element and mod-rewrite alleviate the need for absolute URLs? I need to know before going off on a "change all of our relative URLs to absolutes" campaign. Thanks in advance! Dana

Sudden disappearance from visibility on Google
Our Google position had a sudden and precipitous drop from #3 to #15 in October for our two main keywords: "web design Santa Barbara" and "Santa Barbara web design". I have steadily gotten it back to #7 by putting a lot of effort to our on-page SEO. As of my December 24 SEOMoz report, it was #7, and as of my check yesterday, Dec. 28 it was #7. We were #3 for "web designers Santa Barbara" as of yesterday. Today, i cannot even find our listing on the first 5 pages. Recently, our partner company was engaging in some link building for us that may have just occurred and I'm worried that this may be the cause. I have not yet had a report and actually don't know for sure yet, it has even been accomplished. We had also done some link building in October by a different company we subcontract to and there was a Google type hack of our site. Those were the two major changes that occurred at that time. I thought it would be safe to have some more link building done now, since we'd already survived that first "sudden" increase of links in October. Does anyone have any idea what may have happened and how I can fix this? I am trying not to panic. Thank you in advance for any ideas to understand and/or remedy the situation!

We've recently changed our site over to a new hosting system, we've got similar pages and are now looking at changing the URL's to ensure we do not loose our link juice from our previous site. My question is regarding the URL's, is it worth us changing our URL's to MVC friendly URL have a good or bad affect on our rankings and or link juice? Thanks
