Rank for a keyword with a slightly different designation
-
Hi guys,
I'm a newcomer in the world of SEO. I'd like to rank for the keyword "therapy toy" but I'm used to name my product "therapy smart toy".
Is a slightly different designation of my product can affect my ranking position in the short or long term?
Thank you for your help
-
It's pretty hard to say, though in the absence of other factors I would very much doubt that only placing the keyword in the title would be enough to rank. That said, if paired with other factors like a strong, relevant link profile and solid content, you could definitely see some success.
It's a bit on the older side, but have you ever read through "How to Rank?" It might help your understanding a bit.

Let's say the brand's mission is to develop "Therapy Toys".
Does putting "Therapy toys" in the home page title only, could be enough to rank well for that keyword (with a good DA and external links) even if i'm more using the singular in most of my blog content & product description?

Glad to help Julien,
With only 1 option for you, it may make more sense to target the brand, or model than just the item type.
For example if I only had a 2010 Ford Taurus, I would target that, not the word car.
I'm only going off the basic information I can derive from the previous post so I hope this gives you some direction,
Don

Thanks a lot Don,
Unfortunately I'm developing & selling only one toy, so difficult for me to use the plural... which is much more interesting than the singular... difficult...
I'll put more thoughts into it,
Thanks again

Hi Julien,
That is difficult to answer. Google will take into the "intent" of the persons search. That is to say if I search from something generic like Car, Google thinks I want to see Cars (Buy& Sell) or Images. But that does not mean that if you type in Therapy Toy you will always see sites with Therapy Toys, however from a result standpoint it makes sense for Google to return a site with more than 1 option for such a broad term.
You will find that Google will return different results for plural keywords and non plural keywords as they are actually different words and may carry different intents.
Based on my example above (Therapy Toys, Therapy Toy, and Therapy Smart Toy) the one with the most searches is Therapy Toys. So, if it was my site I would take that into account and try to target that traffic (if possible) with my design.
Hope that makes sense,
Don

Thank you Don, it helps
Do you mean that I don't have any chance to rank in top places for the query "therapy toys" if I always use "therapy toy" (without "s") to name my product? Competitors on this keyword are retailers with a large catalog of toyS.
Thanks again,
-
Hello Julien,
The term "therapy toy" and "therapy smart toy" are two different keywords. Each will generate different results in search engines. While the second keyword does incorporate the main keywords, the results will still vary.
When selecting which keyword to target I highly suggest you use Google Ad Words Keyword Planner to find what terms are the most popular thus bringing you the most potential.
For example on a U.S national level the term "Therapy Toy" receives 20 searches a month, while "Therapy Smart Toy" receives 0. While the broader keyword "therapy toys" (with an s) receives 480 searches per month.
Hope this helps,
Don

Domain Change, Lost ranking on 1 keyword
Hey guys, Long time follower of the Q&A forum, but don't post too often. I'm having an issue I never came across. We changed a domain from mpbuilderscincy.com to mpcincinnati.com. We did the 301 redirect and all the SEO flowed through pretty well. Most pages didn't even change in file structure so we didn't need to do page redirects for the most part. Anyway, long story short, we are seeing the same rankings as we had before now (it's been about 2 months) except for 1 and only 1 keyword. It's "Home Remodeling Cincinnati". We dropped from page 2, to page 11 on Google and it won't budge. Now on Yahoo and Bing, we are right back where we were before already with that keyword. But Google just refuses to bump us back to where we were before the change. The Home Remodeling page: http://www.mpcincinnati.com/Residential-Services/Home-Remodeling.aspx has an on page grade of A for that keyword and we have it as one of our main keywords on the home page of the site (title, h1, alt tags, etc). No errors on the page. I mean it looks pretty clean for this page as far as SEO except for 1 notice that mentions the 301 canonical redirect. We uploaded the new sitemap right away. I just can't put a thumb on it and wondering if you guys had any tips. Thanks, Chris

Keyword every blog post?
Hi Should I be looking to keyword every blog post I write? Obviously the point in a blog for most of us is to draw in traffic so should I keyword research every blog post and use that as keyword? What if there is no keyword stats for the blog im writing? I guess I just use a keyword I make up anyway and hope people type it? Thanks Chris

Local Keywords
Hello everyone. Still loving MOZ. Question: When I research a keyword phrase such as Entertainers it is returning a local search of 15,972. I want to target three specific cities in my area ( Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Akron). When I research the phrase Cleveland Entertainers I'm getting a local search result of 0. Should I just assume that the search is still large enough to use? Should I target Cleveland Entertainers still with feedback of 0? Also is it a good idea to target the word entertainers with three separate pages to three separate cities? I'm planning on making three separate blogs with new content on each. This will not be duplicate content.

Keywords/URL
Greetings! I've read previous posts on this topic, but wondering if something has changed recently...On the on-page grading, the following was suggested:Use Keywords in your URL - high importance - easy fix _(In the past it has read difficult fix). _Could it be as easy as creating a new page with the name in the url, then redirecting to it? My site is www.enchantingquotes.com and the keyword that brings in virtually all of business is "wall quotes". I've read in the forum this isn't worth the trouble of trying to do, but the "easy fix" comment has me wondering...?Any help is much appreciated....I'm been trying to recover from a recent unexplained drop in rank. Ugh! (So feel free to analyze my site LOL!) :DA huge thanks for any advise!

Help with understanding how to target keywords not in content ?
I have a customer suggesting the use of keywords related to his competitors but not in the content of his site or how he promotes his brand. The page content is product specific and I use keyword matches for page and site strength. 1.) Does it hurt or help to load up the keywords with misc. keywords (example- the site is for a premium product use the terms "cheap", "affordable") 2.) Any suggestion for almost blank/generic landing pages ? 3.) Any benefit or penalty for using fewer keywords on multiple pages ? (example - target 6-8 words on 30 pages) I need a few discussion points for my next meeting and to clarify my position.

Newbie has various questions about keywords
Hi All - Im just learning, would appreciate some clarification on how keywords work. Specifically: For a phrase keyword, does order matter? E.g. is 'Bridging loans UK' the same keyword as 'UK bridging loans'? Again in a phrase, do the keywords need to be adjacent? So if I had a an H1 tag on my page which was 'We provide Briding loans for the entire UK', would this be considered a match for the keyword phrase 'Bridging loans uk' ? As I understand it, optimising your site for a certain keyword involves 2 things at a basic level:a) Including that keyword on your site, and b) Getting relevant inbound links from other sites with that keyword as the anchor text. Is this correct? Are there other large scale factors? What is the balance between those 2 (or more) main factors? Which is most important?

Keyword Targeting
If I am currently ranking well for "Lawn Mowers" and I also want to target "Cheap Lawn Mowers" will it affect my ranking for "Lawn Mowers" if I change my on page optimization by adding "Cheap" to the title, H1, etc. or will it effectively target both.
