What strategy is better for a multilingual site for the SEO point of view?
-
Hi everyone, in a case for a site with two languages like spanish and english, how would do you deal with it?
I can see 4 cases, which is better??
1. With differents domains: mydomain.es (for spanish version) and mydomain.com (for english version).
2. With subfolder mydomain.com/es/ and mydomain.com/en/
3. With Subdomain: es.mydomain.com and en.mydomain.com
4 With URL translation (any url is translated in ther languages but not use of subdomain or subfolder): mydominain.com/hola and mydomiain.com/hello
Thanks very much for your answers (i love this forum).

Does it make sense to target my Portuguese translation for Brazil to Portugal as well? Or do I create another version of the site that is hreflang=pr so that people that speak Portuguese in other locations throughout the world will at least get a Portuguese translation?
-
After doing some more research I'm going to go with your suggestion...thanks!
-
By using en-US would I be leaving out English speaking users in other countries? I'm wondering if I should use this format:
For English
For Portuguese
-
Hey Brandon,
I would just do en-US and not bother about having just en. See below for example.
For English
For Portuguese
-
So when implementing hreflang in the head section, do you call out the alternative and main language on every single page?
So for example if I'm implementing Brazilian Portuguese where the main language is English, for my English site it would be:
Then for the Portuguese site it would be:
-
Yup, I think as long as you specify the hreflang for all languages including the principale one you'll be fine.
-
Thanks very much for the answer, i know about the hreflanf, with sub-folder i think for the principal language you can omitted the sub-folder: example.com for spanish and example.com/en for english, but not so sure if that is good.

Hi,
I've actually had to deal with the same issue this year. From the research I did a while ago there's one solution that stood out for me.
I went with the sub-folder. example.com/en & example.com/es and made sure that all my pages add the hreflang attribute that points the page with its language info.
The main benefits of using a subfolder is that you don't have to share your domain authority between the different language sites.

Hi Everyone, My company decided to create a Canadian site for Canadian customers. How do I slowly transition the US site for ranking in Google.ca? I was thinking of using robots.txt to block Google.Ca from crawling the US site? Can anyone provide some advice oh how this should be managed? Thank you!

What's the best strategy for acquisition?
Hi All, Recently acquired a competitor company. This acquired company is small in size but is the exclusive UK distributor for a gigantic Swedish company. This is the way the current domain structure is divided. swedish-supplier.se (Not owned by us - swedish supplier ) Swedish-supplier.co.uk (owned by us, operating as the swedish supplier in the UK) New-acquired-company.com (owned by us) The supplier doesn't want us to have two websites as they keep getting confused customers. Because of this we have agreed to remove www.swedish-suplier.co.uk and solely sell the product at www.new-aqquired-company.com. However, because of the sheer size of the Swedish supplier, a lot of traffic comes through to swedish-supplier.co.uk. My question is, how can we work together with the supplier to remove this domain and still maintain a good amount of UK traffic? Should we point swedish-supplier.co.uk back to the suppliers original translated web site and have them pass enquiries onto us or should we point it to our website? & What's the best way to go about it? Thanks, Danny

SEO for .com vs. .com.au websites
I have a new client from Australia who has a website on a .com.au domain. He has the same domain name registered for .com. Example: exampledomain.com.au, and exampledomain.com He started with the .com.au site for a product he offers in Australia. He's bringing the same product to the U.S. (it's a medical device product) and wants us to build a site for it and point to the .com. Right now, he has what appears is the same site showing on the .com as on the .com.au. So both domains are pointing to the same host, but there are separate sections or directories within the hosting account for each website - and the content is exactly the same. Would this be viewed as duplicate content by Google? What's the best way to structure or build the new site on the .com to get the best SEO in the USA, maintain the .au version and not have the websites compete or be viewed as having duplicate content? Thanks, Greg

Different Countries, Same Site
Hi All, I have recently been given the task of working on a website that sells products in the UK and America, at the moment the site does very well in the UK but does not perform very well in America which I believe is partly down to colloquialisms and difference in language. At the minute the site is a .com and is hosted in the United Kingdom, Does anyone have any useful tips on how to have 2 different versions of the site targeting different locations but using very similar language (Probably would be considered duplicate) Thanks in advance,

The best SEO practice for a .hk domain
We are currently working on a project which involves 3 separate .com domains in relation to a UK company selling/renting residential, commercial and investment properties within the UK. We are now working on producing a .hk site for the overseas customers. Can anyone advise what the best practice is for a .hk domain and where best to start? Should the domain be hosted in that geographical location for example? We are relatively new to this so any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Domain strategy for UK and USA
Hi Everyone, We have example.org.uk with 20K inbound links. We want to target the US as well as the UK. I would be interested to hear what approaches are best for SEO. For example is it better to keep our current domain and have subdirectories for USA for example. Or would it be better to register example.org and then use subdirectories. Or is it better to use different domains for each country? Any help with this much appreciated. Cheers
