No progress in 4 months in a non-competitive area !
-
Hi SEOs
We are a SEO and Web Agency based in Cholet, France. We have this client (Alpage Choaille : <cite class="_sd">www.alpage-choaille.fr/</cite>) for now 3 months, we have done all of the on-page optimization so far but can't get ANY progress on all of the 15 keywords tracked.
This is not a competitive area, and we are looking at "local" rankings ( chalet beaufortain, gite beaufortain, gite en savoie, gite de charme, chalet de charme).
We haven't done much OFFSITE, and we can't see any links on Open Site Explorer or Moz as this site is not part of their database.
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Best Regards,
Benjamin

Hi there,
I'd echo the points above regarding on and off page, especially off page: a poorly optimised site from an on-page perspective can gain rankings based on its great backlink profile. A perfect website with perfectly optimised pages will not rank if it does have links.
Have you engaged in any link development during the fours months? Along with looking at the points Erwan raised, I would look at the backlink profiles of your competitors in the area and decide on a 12 month goal for how many links you need and from which types of sites. Have a look at the link development category on the Moz blog for years worth of good ideas as well.

1/ "This is not a competitive area"... It depends :).
Your homepage title is "Gîte en montagne - Chalet - Savoie | Alpage du Choaille d'en Haut"
"gite en montagne" "gite savoie" "chalet montagne" "chalet savoie" are quite competitive in terms of SEO or SEA.
It you want to target "beaufortain", you should include it in your page title.
2/ Average #1 ranking = 2000-2400 words. Your text = 200 words.
3/ As Matt-Antonino explained, you lack of authority ; you need more links... and more anchors text relative to your keywords.
4/ As far as I'm concerned, I would add a blog to talk about the area, to explain why it's great to stay there and what you can do, testimonials, videos etc.
Is there a way to do great content and to get a few natural links ?

You have 7 total links on this site. There's no authority built - you need to actively attempt to figure out offsite SEO. The onsite is a bit thin but the offsite is holding you back.
Hint: start with TripAdvisor.

Hi Martijn, No worries for french its one hell of a language to master it
Regarding Page Optimization, I took the example of the Home Page :
Home : Meta Title Gite en Montagne - Chalet - Savoie
H1 : Alpage du Choaille d'en Haut - Un Gîte en Savoie
H2 : Bienvenue au Gîte Choaille d'en Haut
H3 : Bienvenue à L’Alpage du Choaille d’En Haut !
Footer : Gite en montagne beaufortain d'exception
Body : Keyword "dans ce gîte montagnard" x1
Too many variations on "Gite Savoie" Maybe, I guess ?
Many Thanks

Hi Benjamin,
My French is terrible so I must have missed something probably. But when I check the keywords you provided against the site and it's pages I can't find any keyword in the META title of these pages. That's one of the basic on page elements if you want them to rank only based on, on page factors.

Duplicate 'meta title' issue (AMP & NON-AMP Pages)
how to fix duplicate meta title issue in amp and non-amp pages? example.com
On-Page Optimization | | 21centuryweb
example.com/amp We have set the 'meta title' in desktop version & we don't want to change the title for AMP page as we have more than 10K pages on the website. ----As per SEMRUSH Tool---- ABOUT THIS ISSUE It is a bad idea to duplicate your title tag content in your first-level header. If your page’s <title>and <h1> tags match, the latter may appear over-optimized to search engines. Also, using the same content in titles and headers means a lost opportunity to incorporate other relevant keywords for your page.</p> <p><strong>HOW TO FIX IT</strong></p> <p>Try to create different content for your <title> and <h1> tags.<br /><br />this is what they are recommending, for the above issue we have asked our team to create unique meta and post title for desktop version but what about AMP page?<br /><br />Please help!</p></title>0 -
Canonical in Shop Areas of an E-commerce Site. When and Where?
Hi Guys. A quick one about duplicate content... So we have a lot of pages that are very similar on our site, but are actually different products. e.g) Our Fortnight view refills and our week to view refills. Our MOZ report defines this as duplicate content. Question: Would a canonical tag be the way to go to 'remove' this duplicate content? And if so, which page should it point back to? Just picking one of the products? Or the higher level Landing page? Many thanks in advance... Isaac.

From an SEO perspective, which is preferable in the URL for a non-English site: local language or English?
For example, the article is titled ' गर्मी में त्वचा की देखभाल कुछ यूँ करें' (English Meaning: Skin Care Tips for Summer), which one of these three URLs is best for SEO purpose? 1. example.com/ गर्मी-में-त्वचा-की-देखभाल/ (URL in local language, Hindi in this case) 2. example.com/summer-skin-care-tips/ (URL uses English words with English translation) 3. example.com/garmi-mein-twacha-ki-dekhbhaal/ (Hindi words, but written in Roman English) A response will be much appreciated, Amit

Google is showing product rating of 1-star in search results when average rating is 3.7 - 4 stars
When searching for the brand name "SteriPEN", the #3 listing on the SERP is for one of SteriPEN's "Adventurer Opti" product at REI.com, On the SERP for this search, the REI listing for Adventurer Opti product displays showing the product as 1-star based on a product review from 2010. What we don't understand is the fact that the product history has a 3.7 to 4.2 rating on most websites. Why would a product with so many reviews and established history have 1 review that drives the 1-star rating from such a prominent retailer? Makes no sense. Any suggestions as to whom we might be able to contact for help with this is greatly appreciated. edit?usp=sharing

Using H3-4 tags in the footer or sidebars: good or not?
Howdy SEOmoz fans! Is it considered a good / bad / neutral practice to include H tags in the footer, as a mean to group a few links? Take http://www.seomoz.org/ for instance: - Voted Best SEO Tool 2010! = H2

- Looking for SEO consulting? = H3
- Product and Tools = H3 Company = H3 etc. I often see the same principle applied to sidebars. I feel like because they don't contribute to the actual content structure and because they are repeated from page to page, we should avoid them, but I have nothing to back my intuition. [+] Perhaps they are helpful for usability (screen readers) and thin added value (i.e. category names that carry more weight than if they weren't headers). What do you think? Thanks for your time.1 -
Non-linked product short descriptions bad on ecommerce sites?
Hi, I have a question regarding SEO for ecommerce: Do you guys think it could be a bad thing to display non-linked short product descriptions of products on the home page and category pages? Can that cause cannibalism between different pages and non-optimal keyword targeting? I have a shop of which it's homepage tend to rank for some unintended phrases. Thank you, E

Competitive Domain Analysis
In the competitve domian analysis my domain root (gpscity.com) is showing up as a 404 not found. My competition is showing up as 200. My site is live, index and viewable, but I'm wondering if this has an effect on my rankings? What can I do to test that it's not returning a 404 when the crawlers view my site?
