Tactics to Get lots of information from newly-registered users
-
Ciao Mozzers!
I'm currently looking at revising a clients signup process. We need to grab lots of information to populate their profiles with higher-quality content.
Some ideas so far:
Facebook Connect - grabbing information from Facebook profiles (a few clicks for users)
Use multi-step/paginated signup form (with progress bar), perhaps using jQuery to show the next question once one is finished
More shorter, specific questions > fewer longer questions
I've been looking around for examples of pages which need to capture lots of information, and like what Quirky do, but has anyone got any other awesome examples or ideas for helping capture more information?

Theres a lot of available APIs on infochimps. One possibility is
their IP demo API -- http://www.infochimps.com/datasets/digital-element-ip-intelligence-demographics
their geo API stuff -- http://www.infochimps.com/apis/geo
Also another data provider like Rapleaf can help get a lot of info from just an email address. Send them the email over the API and return as much profile info as they have on the individual.
If you can get them to give up google credentials or linkedin, then you can access contacts, etc.

User Testing a Website
Hello We're soon going to be embarking on a fairly major site overhaul and while this isn't a particularly SEO related question, I’m keen to integrate user feedback quite heavily in this process and would appreciate your opinion as how best to collect this feedback. These are the kind of questions that I would like to pose: Is it clear when you visit the site, what it is that they do? What is your first thought about the site when you visit it? On the homepage, where is your eye drawn to immediately? When wishing to purchase a product, would this product page draw you into the sale? Do you get a general feeling of trustworthiness on the site? Using the series of drop downs on the homepage, please choose any product and follow the process through to the checkout. Did you feel that this was engaging throughout? Rather than yes/no answers I’d like the user to spend a good 5-10 minutes giving their detailed opinions so that we can gain some genuine inspiration on how best to improve the site. What would be the best method of collecting this data? I was thinking perhaps Amazon Mechanical Turk but the thrust of the work offered there seems to be so diverse that I’m not sure we’d get people in tune with offering the kind of detailed answers that I’d be hoping for. Thanks for your help.

User Friendliness Bible: Has it been published yet?
I started with that intriguing title because that's all i've got. What I mean is, I don't know the exact topics that I am looking for. Anyways, here's the shindig. I was just replying to a nice new member to SEOmoz, and he asked if he should set up his 3 sites in 3 separate campaigns. I was telling him about the different number of keywords that comes with each respectable price, so I had to log out to be sure. Low and behold, not only did SEOmoz not kick me to a "You have been logged out" page (basically, it allowed me to continue, un-interrupted, and finish my thoughts), but it also did something MUCHHH better. LOL i'ma little giddy about it even. So, I typed a fun little response, added my links, and whatnot, and FORGOT that I had logged out to check the prices. Well, when I logged back in and clicked reply again, all of my text showed up in the editor (as a draft). I am wondering, what is the action of trying to think of cool ways to improve your site called? User Friendliness Optimization? User Engagement Optimization? User's Enjoyment of Using Your Site Optimization? ----insert metaphorically cloudy line here-------- Conversion Rate Optimization? At some point it does overlap with Conversion Rate Optimization, but either way, does anybody know of any cool tips to make people "enjoy" their time on your site more?

How do I get Google to rank the right page?
My site ranks #1 for Arabic Interpreting on Google UK. This great, but it's ranking my home page rather than the my specific Arabic Interpreting page. The home page shouldn't really rank for this term as it has very little connection with this exact term. This means that while the site ranks great, the conversion is pretty much zero. How can I get Google to rank the page I've optimised for this term? I know the ranking will no doubt slip but may the conversions will be better. Can you help please?
