What are the advantages/disadvantages of a blog residing on a website as opposed to free-standing and linked to site
-
I have a cleint with a web site and with 3 freestanding wordpress blogs - should we be housing those blogs on the site? should we combine them (its an insurance compnay with several business units). thanks
-
My mistake I was just thinking of making it tidy, taking into account UX when on the site.
I guess in this case you would want:
.co.uk/insurance/car-insurance
.co.uk/insurance/house-insurance
.co.uk/insurance/life-insurance

Having the blog on a subdomain, e.g. blog2.site.com also runs the risk of not benefiting the primary domain, in terms of inbound links to the blog.
The best bet is to have the blog at site.com/blog or have it anywhere and setup a reverse proxy so it resolves at site.com/blog.
Here is a great article/infographic on the reverse proxy: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/what-is-a-reverse-proxy-and-how-can-it-help-my-seo

To expand on this, you could also guest blog to generate relevant traffic, which could help start what Brett's talking about.

I would include at least one main blog to your site. Not only are you putting out fresh new content on your website but maybe one day you will have a huge following of people interested in what you say in your blog. Blogs are great in helping your potential clients but sometimes really fun to read.

The main website wont get any benefit from the unique content you are using on the 3 blogs.
Personally myself, I would be inclined to create 1 blog on the website or even create 3 sub-domains for the blogs if they are not relevant.
For example if the 3 blogs were caravan, classic car and 4x4 insurance I would be inclined to create 1 blog with the different types as categories.
If the 3 blogs were car, house, life insurance I might create 3 sub-domains and link to each one in the footer or something.
But thats just me.

Does google penalize you if you post content in french and english on a website
I'm trying to encourage content editors to only post content in either English or French. For example we have a French press release but the team are wanting it on our site in French and English. I thought this would fall under duplicate content rules. Does google penalize you if you post content in French and English on a website?

Translated text: should I use canonical link?
Hello everybody, I'm writing an article in Danish, which I have translated into English on a Danish blog. But I'm not sure if I have to use the canonical link from the English version to the Danish, or whether I should just publish both without using canonical link. What is your recommendation for this? Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks & regards, Jonathan

Thin/spun content or No content at all?
So I'm working on a site right now that has been plagued with spun/rewritten content..we are talking in the thousands. Now would it be a smarter idea to just remove all the content or leave the content? This is an ecommerce site and I'm tasking a few people to rewrite fresh authentic content. So all of the spun/thin content will be removed eventually. The main question is to just delete it all right now or just replace as we go. I'd like to know what you guys think.

URL structure on moving from old nukedit site to Drupal
I am currently rebuilding a site in Drupal. The old site was in Nukedit and all the urls end in .asp. Given the new urls will not end in .asp is there any point in matching the rest of the url or will using 301 redirects (to better seo'd pages) be sufficient to minimise any (temporary) ranking loss?

Simple question: How many words optimal for blog posts
Hello, We're adding a blog to one of our sites. How many words should be in a blog post for it to be optimal for the search engines? If it varies from industry to industry, please give a couple of examples. We were going to do 500 words but that seems a bit long. Thanks!

Duplicat Website Content? (UK, Ireland)
Hi, My website is based in Ireland on a .ie domain & now I would like to enter the UK market on a .co.uk Is it ok for me to duplicate my .ie website and provide all the information on a .co.uk OR is this considered duplicate content in terms of Google. (I'm led to believe that your own content on my domain's is not considered duplicate & this is only considered duplicate content when you go from .com to .ie, .co.uk etc). (all content, images, branding are my own).
