Changing my url name? Should I do it?
-
Hi,
I am targeting a brand called Creative Recreation, who are a trainers brand. We currently rank ok-ish for certain terms for Creative Recreation Trainers, Footwear and Creative Recreation [INSERT STYLE NAME HERE].
Our main search term I think we would like to improve on is "creative recreation trainers" as we are 6th for this.
Our domain name points to the brands page as designerboutique-online.com/all-clothing/creative-recreation/
Now what I want to know is, would it be worthwhile or would it affect my current rank/index if I changed the end of that url to read /creative-recreation-trainers/ thus getting the keyword phrase in the url?
Creative-Recreation is a hard one to crack as you have a lot of competition from the brands site etc..
Any ideas on this?
Cheers

I agree, it would almost certainly make a difference, but using a 301 redirect is key. Changing the URL and adding a redirect should take no time at all, but may web companies have a minimum charge period.
-
If you're referring to search engine ranking, it usually takes about a month, give or take.
-
If you provided the web firm with a complete list of the old URLs and the URLs you want them redirected to, it should only take them about 10 minutes for them to update your .htaccess file.
-
Also, if I didn't set up a 301 re-direct, how long would it take my pages to come back to were they were?
-
Thanks.
As I do not have access to the sites back end code. How long would this type of job take? As the web firm charge hourly and from my web knowledge it should only take 5 mins?
I can change the name of the URL via the CMS but I cant 301 pages from it, or go back to the old url to do anything, if you know what I mean.
Thanks
Will

Yes, it would most likely affect your current ranking. However, ranking changes due to URL changes are usually only temporary if you set up a 301 redirect. This tells both the browser and the search engine that the page has permanently been moved and it usually passes on the same ranking with a month.

Changing existing URL to boost SEO
What's best practice regarding changing URLs for SEO? If the page contains great information around a particular term but the URL is not reflective of this and thus the page isn't ranking should the URL be changed? Or is it always a hard and fast no? It would seem to make sense to me if the page didn't have any backlinks already and Organic clicks were minimal. Sam

Should I change .html to / ?
On my ecommerce site, we have .html extensions on all files and categories. I was wondering if it is worth the development cost to make all of them / ? Is there any SEO benefit in doing so? Thanks, B

URL language on Global Sites
Has anyone looked into a page not ranking as well because the URL is in English when the subdomain is geared for a different country and different language? I can defiantly see this taking away from the user experience, but didn't know if there was any concrete evidence or case studies that would show if it is a big deal or not for rankability? I know this is a backwards question to begin with because the priority over rankability is always UX, but there may not be a way to fix it unless I can prove it is a big deal.

Keyword weight in Domain Name
Hi All, I'm looking for some advice on URL structure. Our domain name includes 1/2 of many keyword strategies that we're considering. For example our domain is like, dive.com Keyword strategies that we're looking at targeting would include things like, "dive shop", "dive equipment" etc etc Are we competitive to have a structure like this? dive.com/shop/ dive.com/equipment/ Or will this structure yield stronger results? dive.com/dive-shop/ dive.com/dive-equipment/ Your thoughts are appreciated. Thanks! Malcolm

How does changing hosting affect rankings?
I have a hosting account that is ancient. So is it's CPanel, its way of operation (I have to call in to change the zone file), and its hardware and software (It can't even recognize Wordpress as a user so i have to change permissions to change anything.) I plan on moving the site, but I want to prepare for any changes that may happen. Currently the site ranks between #1 or 3 for quite a few very valuable words. It is also in season for this business. I know changing hosting data or servers can cause google to temporarily drop rankings. Does anyone have any experience with this or now how long the faded rankings can last? Or if its even true?
