How to add business address in local directories for consistent NAP
-
Hi Mozers
I keep puzzling over this one! I work from home and really don't want to plaster my address all over the web. The GP page now allows for me to hide my exact location, which is great. However, as far as I can see this is not the case with all the potential local directories and listings.
I have been trying in to get around this by not adding my house number and last digit and 2 characters of my post code. So far this has been allowed by the local listings I have signed up with.
When I tried doing as recommended by the excellent Miriam and checking my business name with 'Getlisted' I found that I could only see these local listings if I added the doctored address, i.e. no house number or full postcode.
My question, finally is, if I continue in this fashion for businesses based at home addresses am I going to confuse the search engines. I want to provide a consistent NAP but GPP insists that I add a full postcode. The only way I could possible see around this is to add:
street name
city
full postcode
and omit the house name/number.
Will this be a reasonable work around to maintain client confidentiality and satisfy the NAP requirement of Local search?

You are very welcome, Catherine. I'm so glad to help!

Hi Catherine!
You guessed it - by publishing a incomplete address, you will definitely confuse the search engines. I sympathize with the wish not to reveal a home address. I value privacy, but desire for this is at loggerheads with wanting visibility, unfortunately. So, you have 3 options:
-
Don't participate in local.
-
Only list your business in those directories which allow you to hide your address. A number of the top ones do allow hiding the address, just like Google does.
-
Decide that you've got to give up privacy for the sake of inclusion in all the local directories.
What you've been doing with listing a partial address just isn't a good idea. Here is a really excellent post from Local Visibility System:
I think you will find that post to be totally awesome for your situation. Good luck!

Local SEO: Spain - having trouble getting to first page
Dear, Moz community We are an online advertising website / direcotry. Lately we discovered that our website due to technical error was in English rather than Spanish and was not ranking in the local Spanish google.es at all. After changing the main language we quickly climbed to 2nd page with rankings in google.es . **My question is on top of regular SEO (Link building, content, blog) what could we do to help us rank quicker in local google.es. ** The same keyword ranks in google.com as #3 but not in Spain. Should we put in the effort to work with local directories? Google MyBusiness is not an option as we are not a bricks and mortar business.

Is it good practice to still pay for Best of the Web Directory (BOTW) and other similar one's you have to pay for?
I know that paid for links are hit by Google, but in the past these directories were okay. What about now? Thank you.

SEO for a franchise business
Were about to embark on an SEO project for a franchise business with about 150 franchises. Would it be best to give all of the franchises individual domain names or house them under the one domain? If they were on the same domain would it be worth setting them up with sub domains or with a URL so city.mydomain.com vs mydomain.com/city Thanks

Local SEO best practices for multiple locations
When dealing with local search for a business with multiple locations, I've always created an individual page for each location. Aside from the address and business name being in there, I also like to make sure the title tag and other important markup features the state/city/suburb, or, in the case of hyper-local, hyper-competitive markets, information more specific than that. It's worked very well so far. But, the one thing you can always count on with Local is that the game keeps changing. So I'd like to hear what you think... How do you deal with multiple locations these days? Has Google (and others, of course) advanced far enough to not mess things up if you put multiple locations on the same page? (Do I hear snickers? Be nice now) How does Schema.org fit in to your tactics in this area, if at all? Cheers (Edit: dear SEOmoz, stop eating my line breaks)

New (google) local SERPs has 40 character limit on title length
Should i change my all the page titles for pages that show up in local SERPs to reflect this new limit? Is there any benefit to leaving it at the old limit and having more keywords in there? Or would there be benefit to conforming to google's new standard and having shorter titles?

Can local SEO harm national rankings?
Today I met with a firm called Localeze that provides local directory submissions. I understand the importance of this service if your site is competing locally, however I'm not sure the effects of local SEO for a national brand. Our firm gets most of our traffic from across the country, not just one location, and our business is scattered (which is a good thing). We rank for service related keywords that are not tied to a location. We do not show up for local results so our business in our immediate location is weak. We would like to increase our local presence in search engines but I want to make sure that this will not take away from our national presence. Will optimizing a site for local search negatively affect general rankings? Thanks
