Hi Lorna,
Have you managed to find the file through FTP?
Drop me an email on matt@wowinternet.net and I will send you over some more info.
Matt.

Thanks Matt. It's a great article, but I don't see any step by step instructions on how to apply schema.org rich text snippets into that product template file?
-
Hi Lorna,
I have recently done this on a Joomla/VirtueMart website.
You need to go in via FTP into your website's root folder and navugate to the following file:
/httpdocs/components/com_virtuemart/themes/default/templates/product_details/vmj_ritz.tpl.php
Once you have got this file you will be able to edit the actual product details page within your shop. I recently wrote a blog on on-page optimisation and there was a section on open graph/schema code so if you follow my instructions on there then it should help you out:
http://www.wowinternet.co.uk/blog/on-page-optimisation-with-a-view-to-the-off-page-seo/
Hope this helps,
Matt.

Matthew, I would be very interested in your recommendation for a solution for Joomla. Just tackling 3 sites on Joomla/Virtuemart after years with Wordpress and OSCommerce. Thanks!
-
Matthew,
Website is in Netsuite. We are doing customizing it as per our need.
Anyway, I dont mind if you share some more knowledge about wordpress plugins.
Thanks

No problem Sameer.
I would also pay attention to what Dana has said below with the Open Graph code because it is just as important to prepare your page content to be shared as it is to optimise for the search engines.
Do you use a CMS? If so, I know a few good plugins that automate this process within both Joomla and WordPress.

Gerd,
Thanks for wonderful information & advice. Most importantly advice about testing.
I am delighted & regretting about not asking this question long back on SEOmoz forum.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I would go through this page first: http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1093493 and then follow the instructions for implementing hproduct here: http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=146750#usage
Before you take your pages live, use the Richnsippets tool to test your markup: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets
Make sure that you include category breadcrumbs in your product pages. The product markup and offer-markup is obvious and quite easy. If your site offers reviews on products, use the hreview tags as well - this will give you great exposure.
Be aware, that Google is quite difficult when it comes to "Your markup contains hidden data" - one example is if your price tag for example looks like this, Google will reject it: $100.50

I just did this today. It was on a 3dcart store, so this may be over simplistic, but hopefully it gets you closer to implementing what you want (your will have to replace the URLs with your own of course):Immediately after your page tagshttp://www.yourdomainname.com/product-image-url.jpg"/> Then you will need to install the Facebook "Like" button javascript on your product pages. You can get detailed instruction on how to get and install this code by going to Facebook Developers area hereI am not a developer and it is pretty straightforward. You are able to define the size,, style etc. of your Like button on that page.Good luck. I hope this helps!

The best place to start here is with schema.org markup code. It will allow you to markup the different parts of your product pages to signal to the search engines the different attributa that your product has.
An example of some of the code that can be used is shown below:
-
<div< span="">itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/Product"></div<>
-
<span< span="">itemprop="name">Kenmore White 17" Microwave</span<>
-
<img< span="">src="kenmore-microwave-17in.jpg" alt='Kenmore 17" Microwave' /></img<>
-
<div< span="">itemprop="aggregateRating"</div<>
-
itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/AggregateRating">
-
Rated <span< span="">itemprop="ratingValue">3.5</span<>/5
-
based on <span< span="">itemprop="reviewCount">11</span<> customer reviews
-
<div< span="">itemprop="offers" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/Offer"></div<>
-
<span< span="">itemprop="price">$55.00</span<>
-
<link< span="">itemprop="availability" href="http://schema.org/InStock" />In stock</link<>
-
Product description:
-
<span< span="">itemprop="description">0.7 cubic feet countertop microwave.</span<>
-
Has six preset cooking categories and convenience features like
-
Add-A-Minute and Child Lock.
-
Customer reviews:
-
<div< span="">itemprop="review" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/Review"></div<>
-
<span< span="">itemprop="name">Not a happy camper</span<> -
-
by <span< span="">itemprop="author">Ellie</span<>,
-
<meta< span="">itemprop="datePublished" content="2011-04-01">April 1, 2011</meta<>
-
<div< span="">itemprop="reviewRating" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/Rating"></div<>
-
<meta< span="">itemprop="worstRating" content = "1"></meta<>
-
<span< span="">itemprop="ratingValue">1</span<>/
-
<span< span="">itemprop="bestRating">5</span<>stars
-
<span< span="">itemprop="description">The lamp burned out and now I have to replace</span<>
-
it.
The itemtype tag signal what type of content the webpage is about. In this example, it is about a product. Then the itemprop tags act as labels to group the different information as the product name, rating, etc.
Full attribute lists can be found at http://schema.org I hope this has helped.
Matt.

How does Google rank a "Site:yourexamplesite.com" Query
Hi All, Sorry for the potentially confusing title. I am trying to find out how google ranks the pages of your site when you search "site:yourwebsite.com". When I did this with my website I was surprised what pages showed up on the first page, there were sub-category pages in the top 5 results and top level category pages that weren't on the first page. I have been unable to find information as to how google returns these results, is it the same algorithm/factors that make pages rank highly in a regular search, or does it have something to do with how recently google crawled these pages. Any feedback would be helpful. Additionally, if anyone has worked through a similar scenario I would be interested to know if there were any insights you gained from finding out which of your pages google returned first. Thanks for the help! Jason

What is the Estimated Time for SERP Rankings to Replenish after a Site Redesign?
Hello Fellow Moz'ers, My company's website, www.1099pro.com, is currently OLD and not mobile-friendly! However, we rank #1 for out most important keywords and don't want to lose that ranking. I've recently redesigned our site, currently in testing, to use the same standard desktop pages but to also have responsive, mobile friendly, pages for different view ports. My question is if anyone knows an estimated time frame that search engines (mainly Google) takes to re-crawl the site and restore SERP rankings to their previous levels? The reason is because we are HIGHLY seasonal and if we are not back at our top rankings by early December, at latest (November would be better), then we stand the chance to lose a considerable amount of traffic/revenue. -The Unenlightened One

Can multiple domains compete with one another if they have the same/similar content?
Could an ecommerce site with a .co.nz nd .com.au domain compete with one another and hard organic rankings if the content of the pages are the same? All the links would be identical (apart from .co.nz or .com.au) the product descriptions, pages titles etc... would all be identical or similar (our page titles are ever so slightly different). Could this be hurting us? Thanks in advance ^ Paul

Internal linking for small site
I have a site with 13 pages, 6 are product pages, 5 are free tips pages (the other 2 are the home page and contact form). Currently I have the navbar at top of site with a "products" dropdown menu for the 6 product pages and a "Tips" dropdown menu for the 5 tip pages. All categories except the contact page are at the bottom as breadcrumbs, the homepage is "home" and the rest are relevant user friendly keyword anchor text. So I have 2 more pages to ad to "Tips" and am wondering whether to have a new 2nd level tips page that links to a 3rd level of 7 different tips pages, or keep it shallow as it is, with only 2 levels from the homepage to the other (now 13) pages, with a potential of 22 pages in the foreseable few years? (and some graphics work to make it user friendly like how Zappo's has categories to the side on each of its drop down navbar menu's and non-link text categories for its bottom of page breadcrumb links) Can those aforementioned pages linking to each other in the footer dilute link equity? (I think that's one of the primary reasons I'm curious). What do you think of this: http://www.dbswebsite.com/blog/2012/08/08/internal-linking-101-5-best-practices/ (I guess I should no follow my contact page), could it be better to have a 2nd level page for "Tips" to get more equity to that page rather than across all 7 tips pages? I have read around about this on here (hence how I found out about Zappo's) and elsewhere and wanted ask to make sure.

301 redirect on Windows IIS. HELP! (Part 2)
My webmaster's trying (but struggling) to 301-redirect the non.www version of my site to the www version. He's following these instructions given to me in a response to an SEOMoz Private Question (ah, the good old days!). So far he's 301-redirected the homepage but seems stuck on how to do the entire site. Any clues on what he should be doing?

Responsive Vs Mobile Sites
I know this is some cutting edge technology, but I think that this will be a very important topic in the coming months, as html5/css3 becomses more and more the standard, or at least standardized, I think the topic of this in relation to SEO will also arise much more. My question is simple, is it better to code a responsive site, or a completely mobile site for a small company with no special needs (mobile ordering, ecommerce, etc...) I obviously know the visuall differences, and, personally, I think respomsive websites look better. From an seo perspective, my big thing is for the resizing, for example, with WordPress, when you reach the tablet size you can set the sidebar to basically display:none, can that impact your website? I would really appreciate any feedback

Best way to set up a site with multiple brick and mortor locations across Canada
I have a client who is expanding his business locations from 2 cities to 3, and working towards having 10+ locations across Canada. Right now we're building location based landing pages for each city, as well as keyword targeted landing pages for each city. For example, landing pages for "Vancouver whatever clinic" and "Calgary whatever clinic" as well as for "Vancouver specific service", and "Calgary specific service". This means a lot of landing pages will need to be created to target each of 10 or so desirable "service" keywords for each city's location. I've no issue with this, however I was wondering how other companies go about this? What's the best way to be relevant for certain "service" based keyword searches in each city? Many of the "service" keywords are 'localized' meaning they will show Google Places results for local brick and mortar businesses for each location. I'm quite good at optimizing locally for this type of thing. However, many of the "service" keywords are not yet 'localized' by Google, I'd want to have my client webpages show well in the SERP's. for these 'non-localized' "service keywords" as well. the new site will be built in WordPress
