Help on blog topics for my niche
-
I'm looking for a couple of blogging ideas to get the ball rolling (mainly in my head) for one of the company websites I am working on. The site is https://perco.co.uk
The company is based around offering trenchless technology across the UK.
The first couple of posts are more like 'Latest news' items and I have only really come up with an idea of 'microtunnelling vs directional drilling'.
I didn't seem to get much out of ubersuggest, soovle and google instant.
Has anyone got any ideas?
Thanks
Shaun -
Thanks for your insightful reply Keri.
I especially like your last idea about having somewhere to point people to instead of re-explaining it again. It should hopefully make their thought process on what they really want as a blog post easier.
-
I don't have ideas -- but I bet the person answering the main phone lines for the company has ideas! So would the sales and customer service reps. See if you can meet with them and pick their brains. What are the most common questions they get tired of answering? What are some misconceptions people have about the industry? What would they love to have a blog post about to where they could just point people to the post instead of having to re-explain the same thing over again?
-
No worries Shaun.
If you can get a debate going between industry heads and influences, you could quite easily generate national PR.
Flooding is hot topic in the UK media atm, i'd exploit it while you can.
-
As they say, it's all in the execution. If you take a journalistic reporting approach, I think it's a good strategy.
It's really a matter of taste. Personally, I'm not one to bash competitors. However, I don't think there's anything wrong with distinguishing your product/services from your competitors.
-
Thanks Gyi,
Yeah it is about being environmentally friendly and reducing the amount of disruption caused to the surrounding of each job.
I like your ideas, they are different to Martins and give me some more to go on!
Would it be wrong to pick on places where it has gone wrong and how we would of done it different?
-
Thanks for your reply, Martin.
Obviously I'm looking at your ideas and thinking why didn't I think of that, but I expected that.
Your outside view is great as well as the example and it seems like a perfect opportunity to link in current events around flooding etc.
The route I'm thinking is writing how rail has been disrupted in the South West of the UK and getting a head quote. We don't have a big enough following yet to get opinions I don't believe.
-
From your site, I immediately got the sense that the primary advantage is the environmental-friendliness of your proudct/services. I'd focus on content around that theme.
Just brainstorming here:
- Why trenchless technology is preferable to other solutions in terms of environmental impact.
- News stories about "non-trenchless" pipe installation gone wrong.
- pipe installation cost estimator tool (including environmental costs).
- Disasters caused by trenching, etc.
-
Lots of things you can do, normally when i'm struggling for content i'll merge current events with an industry spin.
For Example:
UTXs and trackside drainage.
Find a latest news article about the recent flooding that is/was affecting transport and refer the link around the industry (email, social media ect) get people opinion (you could possibly get a guest blogger or get a industry head quote) a good piece of content could lead to inquiries.
other suggestions would be:
- Product History
- Advancing technologies
- Company snippets (target, sales, charity ect)
- Sales targeted blog
- facts and facets
- Top ten lists ect

Why should I avoid publishing off-topic content on my website?
As a fun project, my team wanted to build a mini-food blog based off the lunches we make here at our office -- but we're a software company and, topically, our product has nothing to do with food. Therefore, I suggested that we not publish this content on our website + create a Medium publication instead (this would also help us avoid the headache of creating an entirely new section of our website / potential 404 issues from non-technical editors / etc.) However, I struggled to articulate _why _it's a best practice to only publish relevant content on your website. Is it to help search engines understand what your website is about as an entity? Spam signals?

Can anyone recommend a good reliable blogging platform for a small to medium sized manufacturing and services company?
I've been asked by my manager to investigate the best blogging platform for our company website. On a recent CIM course it ways suggested that Wordpress is not necessarily reliable. Could anyone advise? The blog is required to provide a space for current industry news, casestudies etc. It is also envisaged that the blog will allow comments. I've only got good things to say about Wordpress, but have only used the platform for my own small SEO company.

Is Opening a News Section a Good idea for Topical Authority and Freshness
Hi my website is less than 3m old and its niche is autism. I have identified around 300 profitable KWs (structured from T1 to T3) and over the next few months aim to create high quality pages for each while maintaining a page-tree structure. Currently I have already build around 50 of those pages. While I start off page SEO activities in parallel, I was thinking whether a news/daily digest section on my website will help me build additional value in terms of establishing niche authority and also scoring on the freshness factor. I have already set up google alerts on a variety of Autism related KWs and in process of outsourcing (to one qualified writer) at least two 500 word news articles from any interesting stories or ideas in google alerts. Questions: 1. Am I better off covering these ideas as News Articles or as just normal posts? Though neither of them will be KW targeted, they will be aimed to increase readership and authority. But capturing them as news would allow me to apply for Google News indexing as well. The question is important because based on that I will hire the writer. if Autism News is a better strategy, I will possibly pay a bit more to hire someone with experience in web journalism. 2. Overall, is this a good idea for brand building? Or should I start looking at more long-long KWs (<20 searches pm) and focus creating content for those? The problem is that with 300 KWs already identified > 40 searches pm), I am finding it hard to find KWs in loooong tail that covers a new aspect. For example: "Symptoms for Autism" and "What are the various symptoms of Autism". Now how do you create 2 different quality articles for that!

Can someone define what a low quality blog is supposed to look like?
I know the recent Google update devalued a lot of low quality blogs, but i'm having a hard time understanding what can be considered low quality? My site is www.247VirtualAssistant.com and it wa sitting in the top 3 for all my keywords(virtual assistant, virtual assistants etc etc). Last month everything tanked and now on the 2nd and 3rd page for my keywords. I'm thinking this is because of a lot of my links got devalued but with my limited SEO knowledge, i'm having a hard time identifiyng these. Please help!

Blog SEO Strategy
The current SEO strategy for my company blog is to include a percentage of short tail keywords in each blog post, and not to link to the main site because they are concerned with diluting the blog. I would like to change the strategy and instead use the blog to promote long tail keywords by having each entry focus on around a different long tail keyword. I would also like to use the short-tail keywords for internal linking to strengthen our important pages with keyword rich anchor text (no more than 1 link per 100 words). I would love the advice of the SEOMoz community about which strategy is more effective (or if there is something else entirely we should be doing). Thanks!
