Spanish version of site - best practice?
-
I need to create a Spanish version of an existing site.
My idea was to have the Spanish content switch out the English content if the query string had something like ?l=es. It would also drop a cookie so that all other pages would switch out content as well.
I do want the Spanish content to be indexed and rank in the search engines, though. I would include all of the Spanish versions (with the ?l=es) in the site map and link to them on every page with a link to the Spanish version.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Is this a bad idea?
Thanks!

Thanks everyone. This particular situation is for a local doctor's site who wants to target the Spanish speaking populace as well. In this case, I'll be doing what everyone recommended and putting it into a sub directory /es/. Thanks also to Matt for the additional info on the hreflang. I wouldn't have thought of or found that.

Adding onto what Highland said (and I agree, if you are country-targeting, get the .es) but make sure you use the appropriate hreflang tags to tell Google where to find the Spanish version.
Google recommends hreflang when:
- Your site content is fully translated. For example, you have both German and English versions of each page

Are we talking about something focused on a different country or just a different language group? If it's a different country, I would duplicate your site and then buy the appropriate ccTLD. Matt Cutts has indicated this is the preferred method for doing international and there is not penalty for duplication. This also helps greatly with geotargeting.
If all you want to do is add a different language to the same site, I would go with a subdirectory as opposed to a query string entry. Most sites tend to gravitate towards this anyways (domain.com/en, domain.com/es, domain.com/fr, etc.). Based on what Google has said in the past, this is their preference as well.
If neither is an option, Google will still recognize the page a different based on the query string.

since it's a different language you would be better with duping the site and making a /es/ folder.
this would allow you to use spanish keywords in the file names for better SEO. But you could theoretically do it the way you mentioned.

Hi and thanks for looking. Due to internal constraints we are looking at a .net cms and ecommerce solution, I would have preferred a magento and wordpress solution but we have to work within our constraints. Can anyone share their experiences or thoughts on what cms they would use with seo in mind and what eCommerce platform, again with seo in mind. thanks again for looking and all replies gratefully received.

Site Structure. Which is better?
Ideally, which model is better for site structure: 1. Homepage -> Categories -> Individual Pages (See example here http://www.wordtracker.com/attachments/bead-site-structure.gif) OR 2. Homepage -> Categories -> Sub-categories -> Indicidual Pages In the 2nd model, are the individual pages too far away from the homepage?

On-Site Optimization Issue!
Hello, I have some confusion about how to structure my site to better in on-site optimization. I am using WordPress. Therefore, there are many things that I need to consider as following: Static Page for homepage OR Latest posts? Archive, Category, Author, Attachment and Tag pages - To put meta robots (no index, follow) or not to prevent duplication? If I use Static Page for homepage, do I need to add meta robots (no index, follow) to POINT 2 above or not? If I use Latest Posts for homepage, do I need to add meta robots (no index, follow) to POINT 2 above or not? To have breadcrumb or not? To have recent posts, comment, tag clouds or popular posts/comments widget or not? To have social sharing icons and related posts in single post or not? If you don't mind adding more tips that I don't know it would be very great! Thanks!

Directory site with an URL structure dilemma
Hello, We run a site, which lists local businesses and tag them by their nature of business (similar to Yelp). Our problem is, that our category and sub-category(i.e.: www.example.com/budapest/restaurant or www.example.com/budapest/cars/spare-parts) pages are extremely weak, and get almost no traffic, but most of the traffic (95+ percent) goes for the actual business pages. While this might be a completely normal thing, I still would like to strengthen our category (listing) pages as well, as these should be the ones targeted by some of general keywords, like ‘restaurant’ or ‘restaurant+budapest’. One of the issues I have identified as a possible problem, that we do not have a clear hierarchy within the site, so while the main category pages are linked from the homepage (and the sub-categories from here), there is no bottom-up linking from the business pages back to the category pages, as the business page URLs look like this: www.example.com/business/onyx-restaurant-budapest. I think, that the good site- and url structure for the above would be like this: www.example.com/budapest/restaurant/hungarian/onyx-restaurant. My only issue is, perhaps not with the restaurants but with others, that some of the businesses have multiple tags, so they can be tagged i.e. as car saloon, auto repair and spare parts at the same time. Sometimes, they even have 5+ tags on them. My idea is, that I will try to identify a primary tag for all the businesses (we maintain 99 percent of them right now), and the rest of their tags would be secondary ones. I would then use canonicalization and mark the page with the primary tag in the url as the preferred one for that specific content. With this scenario, I might have several URLs with the same content (complete duplicates), but they would point to one page only as the preferred one, while our visitors could still reach the businesses in any preferred ways, so either by looking for car saloons, auto-repair or spare parts. This way, we could also have breadcrumbs on all the pages, which now we miss completely. Can this be a feasible scenario? Might it have a side-effect? Any hints on how to do it a better way? Many thanks, Andras

Blocking Pages E-Commerce Site
Hello, I am working on a site with 1,000's of product pages, some of which do not have inventory in them. Should be blocking these pages in order to reduce bouce rate? How could i manage so many pages efficiently? It would takes weeks to comb through pages to determine which have inventory and which do not. They are also time sensitive as they are live events so dates are always changing. Thanks!

Is it best to optimize your site for just one or two keywords?
My company/website makes and sells a product that's not that competitive but still has about 20 key words/phrases that people search for. My site is not a huge site maybe 35 pages after you include the blog posts. We sell samples off the site but it's mostly used as a brochure but we also want it to be a successful tool at bringing in leads. Should I optimize for the most popular key word phrases focusing on only one or two per page and forget about the rest or should I try to optimize for as many keywords as possible on all pages or should I optimize for just the few (3-5) heavy hitting keywords but on all pages? Right now I've got it optimized for around 3 keyword phrases for the whole site and only 1 or 2 per page with the most popular phrases on the most important pages.

Should press releases be posted on my site before released to wire?
Should I wait until my press release has been syndicated to post to my press page. If I post it to my press page first, will it cause a duplication problem?
