3 Ecommerce Stores All Under One Roof - Good idea? SEO Benefits? Concerns?
-
I run multiple ecommerce stores in one particular market. I've been considering merging them all together and using a Single sign-on and allowing users to swap between websites. Each site is unique in their own way and are already ranking well on their own. But the goal is to merge them altogether to create a better user-flow.
An example of what I'm trying to do is what Zurb.com does (http://zurb.com/apps). They have all of their different products but they're under different domains.
Another example is http://www.envato.com/sites and all of their brands to their sites.
Will this negatively impact SEO efforts across the board or will we eventually benefit from merging them. Also, is there a correct way to do this. For example; Should I make one site the "parent website" and then create sub-directories of the other websites and work on the DNS to point to the right locations.
I'm not the technical person on our team but I do lead the marketing and I can't find the right answer for this question.

Your welcome. Here's a little insight on the two shopping cart systems I mentioned. Note that both systems have added (and are promoting) the standard e-commerce hoopla of auto-generated product pages and the sort of stuff systems like BigCommerce do. But they do both also have the simpler option of just using the cart and checkout system and allowing you to put your Buy buttons anywhere you can reach.
I started trying to set up AmeriCommerce because it had the most features. But as I got in deeper, the complexity of the features and the poorly written technical documentation overwhelmed me and I gave up. If you have some brainy tech guys they can probably understand the documentation better than I could.
I then switched to UltraCart and have found it much easier to use. You can see the standard cart appearance on some example pages on their website. My cart at EasyDigging.com is pretty heavily customized. They will soon have a easily modified HTML/CSS based cart available. There documentation and tech support is pretty good.

Interesting concept with merging them with only the shopping carts. It may be safer to keep them separate since they're already ranking well on their own. I'll check out those vendors you suggested. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to join in on a call next week. You're right, it's hard to find people dealing with the same issue and I'm reading both sides of the argument with no real answer.

Years ago I tried to do the same thing and Google Trashed all my sites.
So tread very carefully, use nofollows if you are going to link to them or interlink between them.
It is something not often done and very few will be able to give you a definitive answer.
One thing is for sure, people on Google help forum do not understand owners of multiple businesses and will tell you to merge them under one site. Or question why you own more than one site and how you are able to successfully mange them at the same time rather than give you an answer of which they also do not have the answer for.
My best suggestion is to ask John Mueller from Google in a hangout he will give you the best answer, view upcoming dates here https://sites.google.com/site/webmasterhelpforum/en/office-hours

Another possibility is to leave the sites where they are (since they already rank well) but let them all share one single Shopping Cart / Checkout system. I know of a few e-commerce system that allow this. UltraCart and AmeriCommerce are two. You can put the "Buy Now" and "View Cart" buttons on any site and some social media sites (you don't even have to own the sites, which opens interesting possibilities for guest blogging with a shopping capability)
Then you could just re-style the three sites appearance so that they blend well together yet stay distinct. Like three old neighboring houses that were all built in the same era. And freely offer navigation between all three so it pretty much acts like one big website. Maybe put a logo in the header of page saying something like "Part of the Gizmo Group of fine stores". Many people would barely notice that they are moving from one domain to another.
The upside would be safety. If one of the three sites gets a penalty, the other two can continue to pull in customers while you repair the penalized site.
Just tossing around ideas. I've considered doing this with some unused domains we own. Hope it helps you...

Prismic.io CMS and SEO?
Looking for community feedback: Some of our In house developers want to use Prismic.io over Wordpress for it's alleged ease of organizing and "deploying" content. It's essentially a repository for content from which you make API calls to. It's a rather new platform. There a few posts in Quora around SEO but looking to see if anyone has had experience with platform. My concern is around page load times, excessive server requests, and content viewed as code. Any thoughts/ experiences would be much appreciated!

Should our Wordpress blog have the same theme as Magento store?
We installed the Magento 'Aheadworks' extension for our blog but it's quite limited as to what blogging capabilities it has. We are now considering integrating Wordpress for our new blog, but keeping both on the same domain to increase the domain authority. My question is, should we keep the same theme throughout? The blog should be informative and not sales based, so we was thinking of ditching the whole theme for the blog and not having our category navigation bar. Yes we can still have internal linking which may drive traffic from the blog to the web store. We have been recommended the Wordpress Integration by Fishpig but I understand this carries through the Magento theme so I'm not sure exactly how it works. Could Wordpress plugins cause issues with our Magento store or shouldn't we be worried about this?

Any alternative techniques to display tabbed content without using Javascript / JSON and be SEO Friendly?
John Mueller's input in the EGWMH hangout suggests that Google MAY ignore expandable content served by Javascript. Are there any alternative techniques to display tabbed content without using Javascript / JSON and be SEO Friendly? I do however view these as good for website interactivity and UX - and see many examples of websites performing well and ranking highly whilst using these techniques - are there any Google friendly ways to serve content on a page so that search bots can recognise and choose to crawl / consume the content as legitimate fodder?

Parallax, SEO, and Duplicate Content
We are working on a project that uses parallax to provide a great experience to the end user, and we are also trying to create a best case scenario for SEO. We have multiple keywords we are trying to optimize. We have multiple pages with the parallax function built into it. Basically each member of the primary navigation is it's own page, with all subpages built below it using the parallax function. Our navigation currently uses the hashbang method to provide custom URL's for each subpage. And the user is appropriately directed to the right section based on that hashbang. www.example.com/About < This is its own page www.example.com/about/#/history < This is a subpage that you scroll to on the About page We are trying to decide what the best method will be for trying to optimize each subpage, but my current concern is that because each subpage is really a part of the primary page, will all those URL's be seen as duplicate content? Currently the site can also serve each subpage as it's own page as well, so without the parallax function. Should I include those as part of the sitemap. There's no way to navigate to them unless I include them in the sitemap, but I don't want Google to think I'm disingenuous in providing them links that don't exist, solely for the purpose of SEO, but truthfully all of the content exists and is available to the user. I know that a lot of people are asking these questions, and there really are no right answers yet, but I'm curious about everyone else's experience so far.

Many errors from previous ecommerce site. Domain is now just a localized wordpress site.
Many errors from previous ecommerce site. Do I need to redirect every single page that no longer exists at this domain? loveyourcabinets.com used to be loveyourkitchenandbath.com but we have since changed course. We want loveyourkitchenandbath.com to be our local site on Long Island and NYC. Loveyourcabinets.com will be an ecommerce project that I'll be revamping in the coming months. I think Moz as well as Google still has all of the old ecommerce pages indexed. And of course, Moz is shooting me a bunch of error all regarding pages from the ecommerce site that used to be on loveyourkitchenandbath.com. Any thoughts? Commentary? Thx

I need help with international SEO for two sites?
I'll try to keep this clear... I am working with an company based in Germany, they own company.com/de and company.com/en, and that's how they are currently structuring their domains. They also own companyusa.com that they really want to show up in USA only. They want to keep company.com/en for England/english speaking Europe and company.com/de for their German audience in Germany. They are wanting us to optimize/SEO for companyusa.com, and they want that URL to show up as the top google search in the USA for their "company" keyword. What is showing up now is www.company.com/en 1st in Google because it's been around longer and it has more domain authority. What is the best practice for us optimize companyusa.com so that it is the top dog in the USA while not messing up the other domains? Should we merge? Subfolders all around? Thanks for all the input.

Pages vs. Posts for SEO
Hi, I would like your thoughts about pages vs. posts for SEO. I understand the difference in terms of WP structure and have read the SEOmoz blog post about setting up your site for SEO success (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/setup-wordpress-for-seo-success). However, if you're trying to rank for a particular keyword, it seems that either one could work, from an on-page SEO perspective, as far as title tag, URL, meta description, etc. So how do you decide whether to set up a page vs. a post? What are the pros and cons, from an SEO perspective, about using one vs. the other? Thanks in advance! Carolina

Is Facebook like or share better for SEO (social media buttons)
Just wondering whether anybody has experience with this? If Googlebot is able to analyse Facebook activity that is (I'm not entirely sure whether it is...)
