What to do with high-traffic pages that are not related to e-commerce?
-
Hello folks!
We run a webshop selling wine and spirits, which obviously serves the purpose to generate revenue. To add further value to our customers, we have a section on the site, suggesting food recipes. The main purpose of that section is to inspire and educate about how wine and foods can be combined.
Rankings are getting higher on "important" keywords for our business, in terms of products and product categories. However, the recipe pages, which are less important, are getting much more organic traffic.
So here comes my question: Having "less important" pages that do not convert in terms of purchases, but however do get loads of organic traffic, what could I do with these pages, in terms of SEO? Could they be used to pass link juice to other, more "important" pages, that we actually want to rank on?
Thanks!

Hi there
Great to see a content marketing strategy generating "extra" traffic. In order to pass on an SEO benefit, you may want internally link from within the body of the article to your core landing pages. That may pass on "the strength" of that page, as it were. With internal links, you can link to your landing pages with your target keywords a bit more often that you normally would when link building from external sites, but don't overdo it. (I'd say 20-25% of links with your keyword in the anchor text would be OK for internal links - please don't do that for external links!).
Of course, the main objective I see would be to capture that traffic that comes in on those blog/resource pages and get it to convert. Have you looked at running an email widget next to the blog? Perhaps you can use an exit popup, popup, popunder or interstitial ad as well. These methods are more aggressive and "in your face", but contrary to what you may think they really do convert.
Hope this helps.

Hi, thank you for quick reply.
Exactly my thought - if you're looking for how to cook a chicken, you're most certainly not going to buy a wine in the process. So converting home-chefs to wine customers, will without doubt be an uphill battle. However, we do try to inspire visitors and linking recipes to products, by suggesting wines to each recipe.
That being said - the "best" SEO practice, would then be to just pass link juice from recipe pages to product/category pages?

Hey, yeah I'd link them up for SEO, though the benefits will be far less that if you concentrate on funnelling your visitors to these recipe pages through to the target pages. It's really hard to convert a sale when someone is looking for information, but all of the traffic that lands on your recipe pages are now aware of who you are so make sure the site is well branded too!

I earned some high-quality backlinks, but the target page's ranking is not improving. Why?
Within the last three months, I acquired five .EDU backlinks and two editorial links to a page ranking for a competitive keyword. After the first few links came through, the page jumped from #15 to #7. It stayed there with minor fluctuations for a couple weeks. I earned a couple more good links, and the page fell as far as #44. It has recovered a bit then, but has not returned to the first page. It is worth noting that the .EDU links were achieved by sponsoring university programs. Could Google possibly be recognizing this as a link scheme? Are the links being earned too quickly? I don't believe it could be either, as the links reside on high quality, trustworthy sites and there wasn't a sudden major influx of them. Thank you for your insight! Also, I think my username tricked Moz into thinking I'm a staffer. Not the case!

What are the relative values of different PageRanks?
I'm planning a link-building campaign, and I've realised it'd be good to know the relative values of different PageRanks. e.g. does a PageRank 5 site have 10 times as much effect as a PageRank 4 site? Or 100 times? Or 2 times? I'm thinking, rather than spending ages getting 10,000 PageRank 3 links, I should just spend a bit less time trying to get a few PageRank 7+ links! I'm even considering offering incentives to staff for getting links - to do so it would be good to be able to value each PageRank accordingly. Any suggestions / knowledge / experience / stats gratefully received! Alex

1 Domain - 2 Links Pointing to 2 Different Pages
Hi Guys, I wonder if you can give me any pointers: We have an exact match domain name that is ranking #5 for our main keyword and is getting some good traffic through the site. We have just created a landing page for another keyword with fresh content that will be updated every week. The question is, I've been building links to my domain name and I'm just wondering if we built another link from 1 of the sites we already have a link on and point it to this new landing page would this help it rank better or not? Hope the above makes sense. Thanks, Scott

Example of a local "boring-niche" site in a relatively high competition area using strictly white hat tactics
I'm looking for an example of a site in a very boring service niche locally "let's say elevator doors in chicago" or something like that, that successfully using blogging, content generation, etc to achieve top rankings above its spammy competitors. Anyone care to give out a case study? I'm not talking about companies that submit to 100's of local directories like yelp, or google maps rankings. I'm talking about organic or blended serps.

Splitting up pages with more then a 100 links
I got a couple of pages with more then a 100 pages / links on them and thus Seomoz gives me warnings for those pages. For some categories i have over a hundred of pages. I listed all these on 1 sitemap (html) because it is a quick overview for visitors which pages there are. Is it smarter to split them up or is that pollution of the Internet (almost identical pages). If i did so i would use rel="canonical" link to the first page (the original) but is it wise?

Is traffic useful without links?
We have many articles on our sites that bring in a large volume of traffic but bring no links. As an example we wrote an article about the hottest cities in the world. The article brings in over 1000 hits a month on Google and people spend an average of 4 minutes on the page and never return and never link to it. The article also doesn't bring in business because the company sell Air Conditioning. From an SEO point of view should we focus any time at all on writing articles that are useful for the internet community that bring in traffic but don't bring in many (any) links?
