30% loss organic clicks in last 30 days
-
Hey all, I am a bit stumped here so looking for some insight. Our site was starting to rank well for many keywords, and we were getting roughly 25k visitors organically per month. Now we are down 30% over the last thirty days, and I am trying to figure out why. This downtrend started I would say about mid August.
1. No messages in webmaster tools.
2. Our linking building is very good, no spammy links, never black hat. We did have someone attempt negative SEO on us back in July. We disavowed those links as soon as we saw them. Basically all our links come from link baiting to quality content. Many .edu links
3. Content is good and fresh, always adding new stuff to the site. When I look in webmaster tools and look at my search queries for last thirty days, our impressions are down dramatically, but the change in average position is increasing. Our top 25 keywords we saw 15 rise in average position, 5 fall, and 5 unchanged. This makes me think there is just a reduction in the amount of people searching for what we offer, though maybe that's wishful thinking? Is there a way to see search volume this month vs last month?
What should I be looking at here? Hoping to stop this downward trend ASAP.

That's what I did. You can see the results in the attachment and should be able to figure how to replicate.

Yea thats what I am trying to figure out. Are we losing organic clicks due to seasonality, or is it something else. From what I can see based on that our position in the SERPS on average has gone up, then I imagine its seasonality but was hoping someone can provide some better insight.
Is there anyway to run a report on a list of keywords and look at searches performed through google last month vs this month, etc? More recent trends than say the last 2 yr period.

I had a look on Google Adwords keyword planner. There has been a huge increase in the number of searches for 'student debt relief' over the last two year. From 260 to 1400 per month (in June & July).
Given the volatility are you just looking at some seasonality as people focus on holidays?

The company sells a service not retail products. Here is the website.

A Couple of things:
New Google Shopping for Adwords, if you are list products on Google. This has had a dramatic effect versus the old Shopping on Adwords
Also check Google Places, now Business. They had an update in August, so this might be a place to look too
If neither of these are likely, give a bit more info about your site, so it helps with some clues.

Last Linkscape index update
I noticed that under my link analysis that it said: "Last Linkscape index update: 08/14/2012." I would like to try to get a full understanding of what this means? Is this stating that my competitive Link Analysis and link metrics have not been updated since August?! Any help and tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The best way to spend 4 hours/day on offsite SEO?
I have an assistant who is able to do 4 hrs of SEO work for me every day. I don't have much onsite SEO work for him to do, and he's not skilled for social media management, so I'm thinking the best thing to have him do is manual link building. So far I've had him create a spreadsheet of more than 1,000 blogs and directories that relate to the subject matter of our websites, and had him include the domain authority of each and if they use the "nofollow" attribute on their links. Next I will have him start adding comments/submissions that include links back to our sites, starting with the highest DA sties and ones without the "nofollow" attributes. Do you agree this is the best way to have him spend his time? Are there other tasks you would highly recommend? Ryan

"Activating" Links - Do External Links Have to Be Clicked On to Really Have Value?
I heard an SEO talk about the concept of "activating" a link - meaning that if an external link to your site exists, but google doesn't detect that it has gotten any actual clicks, they will significantly discount or ignore the value of the link. Obviously between Chrome, toolbars, and GA, google does have a lot of ways to detect whether a link has gotten clicks. What is the SEOmoz take on this issue?

How to track/find new organic backlinks to your domain
I use Google Alerts to track domain-level backlinks (via the link:http://www.example.com trick) but is there a way to track/be alerted of long urls, not just the domain, without having to set an alert for each specific url?

So I ran into a site that was not ranking 4 days ago and has over 2 million links to it on some keywords. My guess is this is a link bomb, but the issue is this is pushing one of my sites down. Does anyone know a good way to over come a bomb like this?
So I ran http://www.riogrande.com/ into this site not that long ago and wanted to see if any other SEO's have an opinion on it. I've seen a Google bomb before, but the amount of links going into this URL is insane. The thing is how does one over come a Google Bomb? Do you just wait to see what Google does or do you just hope to rank under that URL? I should also note that it appears that all the keywords to it are relevant to the sites content. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks
