Local Seo Start Up?
-
Hi
I've recently started a Web design and Local SEO business in the UK and would love some advice on best practices and resources to do best by my clients. The last thing I want to do is get their site banned or penalised by Google.
In the past I have used article marketing to get 100s of backlinks but I understand it isnt that simple anymore.I might add that I always did SEO for my own sites, never offered it as a service to others. So, I'm less reluctant to take chances.
From looking at the competition in the local market I won't have to get too many backlinks to outrank most other companies. Just need to get the right good quality links. I am fairly experienced with onsite SEO.
ANy advice or relevant resources would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with everyone here, especially about links not being as important or at least not the 1st thing to focus on.
One other thing I stress to new consultants is read the Google My Business Guidelines.
Then read them again with a fine toothed comb.
There are many subtleties that are not spelled out and many unwritten rules, so you need to sort of read between the lines. But things are much more clearly spelled out in the new guidelines.
Here they are in case you have not read yet: https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177?hl=en&ref_topic=4540086 Read all the + Learn more links too.
The last thing you want starting out, is to unknowingly break the rules and get a client deleted or suspended. But if you are very cautious about the rules and stick to Miriam's list you'll be in good shape.

Nice discussion going on here, everybody
Malachy - it's great that you're interested in starting a Local SEO company. I think a fundamental point to make here is that, while links can be important, they are like the 6th or 7th thing on your to-do list for local customers. My list would look like this:
-
Be sure customer is running a legit business at a valid location
-
Develop a clean website with good, basic Local optimization and room to grow
-
Begin to develop content that is local and hyper-local focused, on both the website and the blog - this will continue for the life of the business
-
Build out citations for the business
-
Earn and manage reviews
-
Investigate social opportunities that are a good fit for the specific client
-
Consider projects that could earn good, natural links - these might be infographics you create, exceptional text content, buzz-making news, videos, ad campaigns, contests, newspaper mentions, etc.
-
Investigate PPC
It's really critical to prioritize local marketing campaign elements so that major effort is going into the most influential factors.
You can read more about these factors here:
http://moz.com/local-search-ranking-factors
And here's a good post from Casey Meraz about Local SEO in 2015:

And I highly, highly recommend tuning into BrightLocal's ongoing expert webinar series. Some amazing interviews there.
Hope this helps, and good luck with your new business!

I think one thing you said already has you on the right track - "Just need to get the right good quality links." I agree with this wholeheartedly. The link building guide is a huge tool, but don't forget the basics. I recommend you go through the Local Search Ranking Factors at http://moz.com/local-search-ranking-factors. Here are my 3 pics for getting started:
1. Local Citations. Something like MOZ Local that will accomplish the same thing in the UK. Whitespark maybe? Not sure if they have data for the UK.
2. Good old fashioned on-site optimization
3. Brainstorm some kind of killer content that people will fall over themselves to share. Hands down I've this the best way to generate quality links.
Enjoy your new adventure.

Malachy,
I am in a similar situation as you, being a start up. The only difference is I have done local SEO for several businesses on the side before "starting up."
One thing you will run into is the overwhelming number of people who "do local SEO" for insanely small monthly fees like $99, $199, etc. Most (not all) are able to do this and still build a business because they are doing automated processes like article marketing, blog comments, directory submissions, low value guest posting, etc. These are what will cause your site to get penalized, etc. And quite frankly, these sites with 100's of links can typically be beaten fairly easily with a few high value local links and correct citations. Basically, not worth the risk and not worth the time. It may seem like it is hard to compete in this space doing it the right way, but this is where your skills managing a sales pipeline and educating your potential customers comes in.
I'll refer you to this great article her on Moz: http://moz.com/blog/how-to-have-a-successful-local-seo-campaign-in-2015
"...Remember that in time [websites ranking because of spammy tactics] disappear. If you take shortcuts, you're going to get caught and it's not worth it for the client or the heartache on your site. Maintain the course and do things the right way."
To answer your main question, if you want to avoid any penalties, ask yourself two questions:
-
Does this action improve my client's customers' experiences?
-
Does this action help Google gain confidence in my businesses location, service, quality, etc.?
If you can answer yes to at least one of those for every link or citation you manually build, you are in the clear, otherwise, you are probably spinning your wheels and potentially setting yourself up for a penalty (especially if you are talking about 100's of links, when local is a game won by 7 or 8 links 99.9% of the time). So ask yourself, "does submitting an article to these directories either provide my client's customers with a better experience, or does it show Google that I am a good choice as the local solution for a search performed by a user?" I'm going to guess the answer is no. Now, a handful of these links aren't bad, especially when combined with other good link building strategies, but they certainly won't help you.
Good luck! Rise above the spam, and get your clients some awesome results. One of my favorite techniques is using OSE and Ahrefs to uncover ALL the power links that client's top local competitors have in their respective profiles, and then work with my client to help them gain these same links. Typically, the big time links uncovered from this method are from government website, local organizations, etc., and the actions that you need to take in order to get these links requires your client to develop their business service offering or realm of influence in the community in some way, like offering a new discount, or donating, or joining a group. It helps both online and offline! Then we become more than SEO's... we become marketers helping our clients grow holistically.

English pages given preference over local language
We recently launched a new design of our website and for SEO purposes we decided to have our website both in English and in Dutch. However, when I look at the rankings in MOZ for many of our keywords, it seems the English pages are being preferred over the Dutch ones. That never used to be the case when we had our website in the old design. It mainly is for pages that have an English keyword attached to them, but even then the Dutch page would just rank. I'm trying to figure out why English pages are being preferred now and whether that could actually damage our rankings, as search engines would prefer copy in the local language. An example is this page: https://www.bluebillywig.com/nl/html5-video-player/ for the keywords "HTML5 player" and "HTML5 video player".

Why no backlinks from popular local news portals?
Hi friends. I build link portfolio for local businesses and found out that publishing payed news articles in biggest local news portals we never see backlinks coming from these portals. Interesting is that these articles even appears in google search. Backlinks is correct with anchor text. How is it even possible? For example latest article https://www.delfi.lv/bizness/komerczinas/kravu-parvadajumi-ar-temperaturas-rezimu-lielakie-izaicinajumi.d?id=52924741 or this https://www.tvnet.lv/7092731/es-ierobezojumu-ietekme-uz-kravu-parvadajumiem Stuff swears there is no restrictions. They even asked extra money for google indexing. You can see there is correct link in article. Any suggestion or idea how is this possible would be highly appreciated.

Opinion on stripping down homepage to two navigational links for SEO
I am in the process of restructuring a clients site who offers two niches. One is an event venue and the other is private dining. We have struggled in the past with ranking for either one since google sees restaurant and event venue as two distinct businesses. So on the homepage I would like to essentially 'divide' the site into two sections - Weddings and events, and Dining. From there people can choose which part of the website they would be directed to. (There are other things we will do as well, like up content etc. but this is the start) So my question is this - from an SEO standpoint should I do away with a menu on the home page and only have two links there and have the site hierarchy go down from there, does this give more 'juice' to the two categories? or will it hurt the site since there is no about, contact, etc page link on the home page? thanks for any opinions on this!

Find high DA link opportunities in your local area
Hi, part of my link building strategy is ideally going to be from outreach to local businesses. I run a local service business operating in multiple locations (with no physical base). I have created local landing pages on which I'm showcasing local businesses and photographers (relevant not in terms of industry but location). Its my intention to show off their business as best I can, then get in touch to say "hey, we love what you're doing with X product/service, check out our site here [link]. We'd love it if you could link to us etc etc". Assuming that this is a valid strategy, what is the best way to find locally relevant sites with the highest domain authority?

Local SEO Website Structure.
Hi everyone, This might be quite a long post so please bear with me. I am currently rebuilding my website. My previous website was built by a web designer and was very basic. 5 page html site consisting of home, services, gallery, testimonials, contact pages. None of them were great - thin content, not optimised as well as could be - no h1's etc. To be fair I knew nothing about websites and didn't bother much with the site. As a new business I used it simply as a place for people to visit for more information after receiving a leaflet and never bothered much about driving traffic to the site. A few years down the line and I have realised I need the website to be working for me as opposed to alongside me. I am building it myself via wordpress as web designer didn't want to work in wordpress. I have done my keyword research and I'm working on pages as we speak. Previously my homepage - around 80% of visitors landed here for my main keyword (driveway cleaning glasgow) as it was number 6 in the organic listing. With my services page appearing directly underneath in 7 for the same keyword. I have starting building a new page for that keyword which contains (driveway-cleaning-glasgow) in the url. I have 301'd my previous services page to this url. Now for my questions...
Local SEO | | sfrediktru8
My 2nd keyword based on volume is driveway cleaning. How do I optimise for this or will the (driveway-cleaning-glasgow) page rank for this also as the words are contained within this page? I plan on having the same structure for the remaining services - pressure-washing-glasgow, monoblock-cleaning-glasgow etc, etc. As I am building new pages for each service with location built in, where does this leave my homepage? Should I be targeting keywords for this page? It is still my strongest page and apart from the (driveway-cleaning-glasgow) page which will get some help from the 301 these are all new pages so I would expect perhaps initially to lose some traffic. But as I am not ranking well for anything other than the main 2 keywords mentioned above it can only be beneficial long term when google recognises the specific pages for each service. And when I start using Adwords I will have a specific landing page for each service. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks0 -
Rank Locally and Globally (or at least Nationally)
I work with an interior design whom I've persuaded to purchase a virtual street address in the town she wanted to work in years ago. She has a Skokie, IL business address that has been claimed and confirmed across the internet. Now, she is growing and wants her new website to not only be optimized for the more affluent areas of Chicago but she also would like to gain Global notice, (I'd settle for National). My problems: She doesn't want to purchase a street address in Chicago because it is a pain to go get her mail. What do I do about all her directory listings and review sites that have her located in Skokie if I can persuade her to get a Chicago address? Do I leave the Skokie address and add more content targeting keyword phrases with Chicago? What should be my initial focus here? I feel it is a smaller target and less competition to go after Chicago but she wants to start spreading her wings and work all over the world. Help!!

Why do SMB owners want more calls as a result of SEO, but don't answer 62% of them?
Working mostly with SMBs for 8 years now, we have gradually developed the notion that small business owners are hard to reach by phone. Our Customer Service agents spend hours unsuccessfully trying to reach business owners. If a potential customer calls the business, they'll have to face the same outcome. This means missed opportunities for both parties. Needless to say, one of the most important KPIs in local SEO is the number of generated phone calls...but no one's there to answer. We wanted to dig deeper into the matter, so we did a small study with 85 businesses. Results show that: 37.8% of calls are answered by a person. 37.8% of calls are answered by an answering machine, where no actual conversation (nor conversion) is possible, so we treat these calls as unanswered. 24.3% of calls are unanswered. We also gathered a list of possible solutions to the problem, but what we really need to know is WHY do business owners neglect such an important part of their business? And what resolutions can you think of?
