How to set up redirects with a company takeover
-
Hi there,
We are about to take over a player in the market with some good DA en PA's. We choose to redirect all the pages from the domain we take over to our main domain for now, later we want to redirect all categories to relevant and similar categories on our own domain.
The company we take over is using a server which will be cancelled in a while. For now we set up the 301 redirect(s) on their server we take over. Because of the extra costs we will cancel the server in a few weeks/months. What is a common way to keep 301 redirects alive after cancelling the server of company we take over?
I hope someone can give me the help I need in this one.
Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Marcel -
Taking websites offline, redirecting multiple times, can damage the value of a business.
They are actions that must be carefully considered, developed into a plan, and then played in the proper sequence. Doing this properly requires a lot of detailed study to maximize value of the assets.
For that reason, I can't give you a detailed procedure for doing this. It is different with every website. When I have done this type of work, I develop a plan and then get feedback or confirmation from other smart people. It's not the type of work that is done on generic methods or quick answers from a Q&A post.

Hi EGOL,
Thanks for your response, and your advice.
Running the site we take over is not an option because of many reasons, so we chose to redirect the domain to ours. IS it that bad to use a 301 from the root of the domain we take over to our domain for the time being? Because the website we take over is 'temporarily offline' now, and we want to push DA, customers and Google traffic to our website asap. Later on we will go in details for the specific redirects of URL's from 2nd and 3rd tiers.
There is a plan for taking this company over.
I hoped to receive an answer on my question how to fix the specific redirects later on when the server of the company we take over will not be online anymore. How can we keep the redirects alive when the server will be cancled?
Thanks again.

My 301 redirects will be in place when I am at my funeral. My business succession plan instructs those who remain to protect them.
I would not be in a hurry when taking over another domain. There are many options that include running the site, rel=canonical, and many ways to do the 301 redirect. It's not a good idea to redirect and then change to a new redirect.
Depending upon the domain you took over and the domain that you own, the right plan can make you a tremendous amount of money. The wrong one can cost you money that you never knew about. If this domain is worth very much, I would invest in a detailed analysis from an experienced person.

Htaccess redirects
Annoyingly it's time to play with this beast again. I've been given the task of doing the following. Keeping the homepage live Redirecting categories to the specific categories on the new site Catch all redirects Now i've managed to setup the specific categories and the catch all redirects, however I am unsure how to keep the homepage live (which is like this:www.domain.com/ so I can't just exclude that?) Would appreciate any help.

I understand the # will comment out a line, does this mean the sitemap would
not be picked up?

302 redirected links not found
There are so many 302 redirected links you found among which most are for the pages which needs users to login to view the pages so redirection to login page is unavoidable. For example: https://www.stopwobble.com/wishlist/index/add/product/98199/form_key/QE0kEzOF2yO3DTtt/ Also we don't have product compare functionlity, but still there are so many links from compare page which redirects to respective category page. For exammple: http://www.stopwobble.com/catalog/product_compare/add/product/98199/uenc/aHR0cDovL3d3dy5zdG9wd29iYmxlLmNvbS93b2JibGUtd2VkZ2Vz/form_key/QE0kEzOF2yO3DTtt/ We need to know from where Moz crawler is detecting these links so that we can supress them from being crawled. I already tries to review overall site and confirmed these links nowhere exists in page source or in sitemap.xml

301 Redirect Questions
I have a site I built on a wisiwig editing platform that will not allow a 301 redirect. The site has already been remade and I need to point it to another domain. To do the redirect, can I change it to another domain host that will allow a 301 or will that make me loose the authority of the site? I may not be able to move the content of the site. Please help.

301 Redirect
Need a little bit of help on this one. I have a product page which actually has 3 products on the page in question: www.example.com/products I thought it would be best for each product to have a page on its own: www.example.com/product-1 www.example.com/product-2 www.example.com/product-3 however my question is: The page with the 3 products www.example.com/products where should the 301 go to? Can you do a 301 to all the new product pages? Hope that makes sense Kind Regards,

Redirection in two phases
Hi, One of my client want a website revamp in two phases. The first phase would be to move the CMS from Sharepoint to Drupal keeping the same content and URLs but the page extension will change (it could become php or just the name of the page without any extension) The second phase will be a content revamp with URL change. The first phase will last 3 weeks and then we will push the second phase with the new content and the new URL. Some shortcuts to make it a more readable: old url = OURL old url with new extension = OURLEX new URL = NURL My problem is how can I manage the redirections. Should I: Phase 1: create one rule that will redirect all the OURL to the OURLEX Phase 2: keep the rule I created in phase 1 and add rules for OURLEX to NURL Or Phase 1: create one rule that will redirect all the OURL to the OURLEX Phase 2: keep the rule I created in phase 1 and add redirect OURL to NURL Or Phase 1: create one rule that will redirect all the OURL to the OURLEX Phase 2: remove the rule I created in phase 1 and add redirect OURL to NURL Or Phase 1: create a rules for each OURL that will redirect all the pages to OURLEX Phase 2: remove the rules I created in phase 1 and redirect the OURL to NURL Or Phase 1: create a rules for each OURL that will redirect all the pages to the OURLEX Phase 2: keep the rules I created in phase 1 and add rules to redirect the OURLEX to the NURL Or something else you think is better Difficult to explain, let me know if it's understandable. Thanks for you help! GaB
