Different WP Taxonomies seen as duplicate content
-
Hey guys,
We're seeing Moz report "duplicate" content on pages like: mysite.com/interesting-category/ and mysite.com/interesting-tag.
Why exactly is this, and is there something that we should do about this? Obviously some of the same posts will intersect on pages like category, tag, author pages.
Thanks

Thank you so much for the detailed debrief Nigel. Very helpful!

Hi Andy
There is no problem using tags and categroies on a Wordpress site as long as they are handled correctly with whichever SEO plugin you are using.
Categories - Should be seen as a natural hierarchy for the site so I would fill in the Meta titles and description and add some fleshy text to those page so that the you are describing the content for the user. It's also great for SEO and sets those pages aside from others on the site as the content is unique - 300 words plus, (preferably a single line of text at the top and a beefier section below)
Tags - these are a pain in the butt and I would simply noindex/follow them so that they do not show up in SERPS. I see these as simply an extra form of grouping for the user. They generally create skinny content pages of little value and should be completely downgraded.
There is often confusion between functionality and SEO as they rarely go hand in hand. You need to present the best view for your reader, user, customer - that is the priority. At the same time you have tools like noindex and canonicals to get you round the problems of skinny content and duplication.
If you stick to the one page/one keyword (or tight, contextually similar group of keywords) then you will be fine.
When it comes to author archives I noindex them and when it comes to article snippets then the shortest one available or none at all - as every line of text that is repeated on different pages is duplication.

Once again, Authors on the site will have their own archive pages as well. A chronological list of all posts by that author. So if you tag or categorize without purpose and the tags and categories have no separation you will have duplicate content across all three types of archive pages.
Here is a good post explaining tags and categories. http://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/categories-vs-tags-seo-best-practices-which-one-is-better/
Don,

Thanks for the reply Don. Solid points, all of them, however not really ideal case-scenario, not solution.
Tags are more helpful than Categories on a per-page basis (especially on our end) so we'd rather use those. This presents a diff problem, because using 4 tags on a post would duplicate it across the tax page for all 4 tags OFC. I'm really curious what others think of this as well, simply giving upgood user functionality doesn't seem to be a smart strategy in my eyes. I would probably go ahead and noindex nofollow all other taxonomies except on.
By the way - this situation happened with a category vs author page. So not even cat vs tag. Even more annoying!

Hi Andy,
I recommend using tags or categories not both on your WordPress website. You see, they are essentially the same thing. A Tag or Category will create an archive page once it the taxonomy is created. All posts or content that is either categorized or tagged with will display on the tag or categories archive page.
So if you have a post called Why I use Moz, and that post is categorized as SEO and Tagged as Best SEO Practices. You just created 2 new archive pages with the same post. Creating duplicate content. Now because these archive pages are in chronological order, new posts that are tagged and categorized using the taxonomies given above, the archive pages will always be duplicated because the content never differs.
To combat this use one or the other. I prefer categories. You will not get an extra SEO benefit for tagging your posts or categorizing them. This is for user experience and will have little effect on your ranking. However if you use tags and categories wrong you can get lower rankings for duplicated content.
Thanks,
Don

Content Creation For Blog & Ranking Locally
Hey Everyone, I'm trying to rank for specific long tail key words such as: lower back pain treatment exercises lower back surgery options herniated disc exercises and etc. My question is: If I create a blog or article on these key words and integrate content and video within it and on youtube, will these blog posts come up locally when someone searches it within my area?

How to optimize content pages with ecommerce?
Some content pages act as buyers guides for certain products for example Used Paddle Boards for Sale - http://www.islesurfboards.com/used-paddle-boards-for-sale.aspx this is a content page that gets huge amount of traffic and is pure content with no products on the page, but we also have a ecommerce section of the site that is Used Paddle Boards for Sale -http://www.islesurfboards.com/buy-used-paddle-boards-for-sale.aspx however this page just has a small paragraph and all the ecommerce product related to this section on the page. The content only page above gets all the traffic and rank and then they click over to the actual ecomm section wiht the products from a link on that page. Should i merge these two together so its just one page and put the content on the ecom page? If i do all the content with push the ecommerce products down which is not good so what does anyone recommend as a best practice? Also will this mess up the content pages rank is i merge them assuming i redirect? or Keep them seperate like i have with a content page regarding "used paddle boards for sale" and an ecommerce page that sells acutal "used paddle boards for sale"

Possible to recover from Thin/Duplicate content penalties?
Hi all, first post here so sorry if in wrong section. After a little advice, if I may, from more experienced SEOers than myself with regards to writing off domains or keeping them. To cut a long story short I do a lot of affiliate marketing, back in the day (until the past 6 months or so) you could just take a merchant's datafeed and with some SEO outrank them for individual products. However, since the Google Panda update this hasn't worked as well and now it's much hard to do - which is better for the end user. The issue I have is that I got lazy and tried to see if I could still get some datafeeds to rank with only duplicate content. The sites ranked very well at first but after a couple of weeks died massively. They went from 0 to 300 hits a day in a matter of 24 hours and back to 2 hits a day. The sites now not rank for anything which is obviously because they are duplicate content. The question I have is are these domains dead, can they be saved? Not talking about duplicate content but as a domain itself. I used about 10 domains to test things, they ranged from DA 35 to DA 45 - one of the tests being can a domain with reasonable DA rank for duplicate content. Seeing as the test didn't work I want to use the domains for proper sites with proper unique content, however so far although the new unique content is getting indexed it is suffering from the same ranking penalties the duplicate (and now deleted content) pages had. Is it worth trying to use these domains, will Google finally remove the penalty when they notice that the bad content is no longer on the site or are the domains very much dead? Many thanks

Getting Duplicated Content Removed
So I recently took over an in-house SEO role and began some house cleaning. I found a few places that had copied or duplicated our homepage content. Naturally I reached out to them to ask them to remove or change the content. Today I come to the office and one of the sites I had requested to remove the content, had fired back at me that I was being rude, threatening and I should go f**k myself. As if this wasn't enough this guys was an upper level manager (managing director) and knows the upper management where I work. Now I have people in my company pissed at me, when I thought I was doing the right thing. Am I in the wrong or what? I had simply asked to remove or change the content and that failure to do so could result in legal action. I understand that it could have been misconstrued as a threat (which it wasn't intended to be) but its seems like a pretty immature response from a higher level person. Any thoughts or advice on what to do next?
