What are the best link strategies to increase rankings in Local Pack / GMB and where to find them?
-
As someone who manages GMB for 50 plus local US clients, I absolutely loved this article https://moz.com/local-search-ranking-factors#local-pack-finder-ranking-factors and found it somewhat useful. Most of the gurus are saying link building is the key, but I wish at least one of them would mention where do we find these links. Is there a reliable source for this ( based on personal experience only please ) ? A one stop shop for any local business to do quality links ?
I feel like to be truly useful to a local business this piece of the puzzle is missing and I would truly appreciate anyone's help.

thank you so much, I will look into it

Thanks Miriam - I'd not heard of that one - looks awesome. Yes outsourcing is not good but if you've got the tools to identify when the agencies have gotten you bad links you can always ask them to get you some good ones to replace the bad ones.
I've done that with a few agencies and they are not bad people - they are trying to do a good job and develop their own good relationships and I think they get let down by bloggers and make mistakes just like the rest of us. So when they do and you've paid them you must ask them to make it right for you.
But if someone put a gun to my head and said get me a DA70 link by tomorrow I'd collar one of my dentists or therapists or nurses and make them write an article about how great their university experience was and send it to the student newspaper or uni blog.
That's a truly marvellous way of getting exposure. Incidentally Oleg emailed me and our conversation was about product suppliers also. He works with dealerships for example and there will be lists of dealerships on the main car websites. Every product I use from the sunglasses patients wear to stop the lights getting in their eyes to the bubblegum-flavoured mouthrinse. I've written to them all about how much we love their products and they'll 7/10 times bang it straight up on the blog or put a link in my signoff at the end of the review.
I'm actually starting to like linkbuilding. It's like spreading love around and making people fee nice about their products in return for links. I'd do that all day.
Thanks for the endorsement Miriam. blushes I love it here.

Hey Oleg,
Ed has provided an excellent answer, and while I don't recommend outsourcing linkbuilding, I do highly recommend that you check out ZipSprout's sponsorship finder product: https://zipsprout.com/
It's a great way to help you build local relationships. Recommended reading: https://moz.com/blog/guide-to-local-sponsorship-marketing

No you simply can't outsource it. It's hard graft and the companies you outsource to will use some white some grey and some downright black hat methodologies.
If you have any professional services then I could give you some really useful advice. What sectors do you operate in? Being on your own is hard. I' on my own but I just have one site to worry about. But we punch above our weight.
Why don't you email me some specifics: ed@sexydentistry.com and I'll be able to tell you about the good the bad and the ugly. I don't want to get into trouble on here because I don't want to offend or make enemies - and also it's not really a marketplace either. but I don't charge. I'm here to help. And I'm sure i'll need a favour in return one day lol.

Thanks for your feedback, its really helpful. Because I'm one man show right now, it would really help to outsource the link building part to some reputable agency. If anyone knows one - would really appreciate if you share the name.

Ok so you have two avenues here and people focus usually on one and not the other.
I'm a local dentist and struggled with the map pack. I find it easy to rank number one for terms with a local identifier like 'product+location' which always trigger the maps.
The problems you might encounter are that the maps are great but they take the user to the home page. This is problematic because I'd actually rather them be taken directly to my product page and not have to navigate around to find what they're looking for. So maps are great but they do have this annoying limitation in UX and I find from looking at user feedback from recordings (like from Hotjar) that they can get lost and pogo back to the serp - always bad.
The other limitation is NAP-W. So it can be worth getting your NAP absolutely squared away - which it sounds like you have. But I got some great results from doing an audit with a company called whitespark who basically do it for you for a few hundred dollars. Moz also have a great tool but it's not working here in the UK at the moment. However, my NAP was in a mess so you may well not need these although it's a small investment and got us from 7% to 14% in the maps (out of thousands of positions) so that's a LOT of map 1-3 positions.
So places you must go are:
-
INDUSTRY SPECIFIC (like universities and local clubs and trading links with local businesses and local bloggers) Bloggers want money and for hardly anythign they will publish nice advertorial that will move the needle.
-
LOCAL - It has to be local. google 'Hyper local citations' for some examples.
-
BUSINESS - and this is the one people neglect. You sell a product but you are also a business so get in touch with local business groups, start up organisations and write articles about business. Then you have two sources of links. Your product and general business stuff too. This is how I've had some massive successes. Local newspapers will write about small businesses and the people and stories behind them. Use this.
Avoid signing up to rubbish local directories. They don't work. I read in Search Engine Roundtable - (which is reputable) that there are still some good directories out there but I ran them through my systems and they are all absolute rubbish. I respected that company and really lost a lot of respect for them when they were touting these crappy listing companies. Probably paid. Who knows.
Remember NAP and directories are different. You need to be listed in relevant citation sources like local newspaper directories for businesses but the old web directories are a waste of your time and money.
If you have professionals working in any of your client organisations get them to write for their university alumni - if they went to uni in their city this will skyrocket your local pack presence.
But if you are new it can just take time. So be patient and don't try anything shady to try to game the system. Google is getting smarter and smarter and what worked even 6 months ago will get you penalised after the huge quality and link algo changes that happened in March, April and possibly in May too (of this year)
Also remember link building cannot be done without building relationships with real people. It's essentially now PR. Doing real things with real people in the real world. Gone are the days of basement linkbuilding. Use your brain not the tools. And don't copy other sites because what they did 9 months ago might now be banned in the eyes of google. Sure model their successes but don't blindly follow their strategies - they might be working with less reputable agencies and you'll do yourself harm.

NAP question and Google local.
Hello, My client has successfully grown one of their event venues locally (lets call it venue A) and on the back of that bought two more venues (B & C). Then created an umbrella company to manage all three. He now wants to market the umbrella company and so redirected the original successful venue domain (A) to the new umbrella company domain. The umbrella company is located at the same address as the original venue A. So it shares the same address, phone number, website as venue A but a different name. All this done before me. He has a Google local page for the original venue - venue A- and changed the domain on it to the new one. He also has Google local pages for the other two venue locations. But doesn't have a Google local page for the umbrella company. Now he finds rankings are down. Looking around I can see that his citations are all based on the original successful venue name A - but he has changed the website URL on many of the citations to the new domain. So a bit of a mess as we have a mixture of addresses, same phone number for all 4 , different business names for all 4, same website for all 4. If all the venues plus the umbrella company are in the same city, but have different names and addresses but the same phone number (for bookings) and web address, are they allowed a Google local page each? I suggest just having a Google local page for the umbrella company and remove the others as they are not actually separate businesses although they do have different addresses. But unsure if this is correct or necessary. Not sure how to progress with this one and any help appreciated?

Multiple Google Business Pages/ Backlinks for Google Maps
Hello, I represent several attorneys in the metro Atlanta area. In doing my research with open site explorer and other tools I am finding that many of the competitors have more that one, if not several personal and branded Google business pages.

So this raises several questions while I go through my Local SEO strategy. How Many Google+/My Business Pages Can A Business Owner Have? Should I be creating backlinks for the Google Business Pages as I do for my clients website? I noticed that some of the competitors are creating backlinks with their Google Map Location URL, is this a best practice? In addition to those questions, I am curious about the various different Google+ pages that are available to business owners.
As of now, I create and cultivate the following Google Pages for my clients: Claim a GMB Page and optimize it with photos and accurate information Attached to the GMB Page there is a Google + Page(this is where I share blogs and updates for the business). Upon further review I feel like there are a few steps that I am missing in regards to the Google + pages. Listed below are the links to Local Market leader for Criminal Defense in Woodstock GA. From what I can tell he has 4 separately branded Google+ pages that are all verified. https://plus.google.com/104434819427186216811/about https://plus.google.com/113476381600385352368/about https://plus.google.com/104300020905072698361/about https://plus.google.com/103523192982501886740/about Should I be taking the same approach?0 -
Is the new local 3-pack the death of Google+ as factor?
So now we have the new 3-pack local results, which obviously cut the listings Google+ link from the results. What I find strange is that is now even when searching the business name alone, there is no sign of the associated Google+ page in the results. I still get other local third party listings like Facebook, Yellowpages, and Yelp – but no link anywhere for the Google+ page. I noticed this today when I wanted to verify something on a client’s page. There was nothing I could do search wise to bring up this business Google+ page. I finally got it by clicking the link through Moz local. After exploring this with some other clients, when I do get a Google+ page in the search results some have produced a 500 error when clicked on. If Google wasn’t killing off Google+, why would they completely omit the pages from their own search results? Another extremely strange thing, the majority of my clients are independent local businesses inside a large national company. Their Google+ listings have always been managed corporately using a bulk listing feed. We could never gain access to these pages and would always manage our listings to match that of the corp. controlled page. Well the last week of July they announced they were giving us the option to take control of the page. This happened with two different companies, MAJOR national competitors in the same industry, within a couple days of each other. They now treat it just like another version of social media, instead of a major factor within search. I find it hard to believe that something isn’t going on…

Google + / Local for Business. How to SEO ?... Done the basic but no real change.
Hi All, We have set up all of our Google local for business pages which are verified and these link to the relevant branch pages on our website. The branch pages also link back to the relevant google local page. We only appear for one category on the google local pages and we have also done a large number of citations (NAP) across all locations and the text used in each of the google pages is keyword rich and we mention the city in there as well to localise it. We have a few google + likes and we have used hootsuite to publish the same content across some of the google local pages which links back to our website blog , we are not appearing in local search whereas our competitors seem to be appear for all their branches. Is there any fundamental tips or things we need to do to def. get up on the rankings.. Or any good articles worth reading ?.. I've had a look but can't seem to see anything relating a google local business bible.. thanks Pete

How to find which directories to submit my new site?
Hi Guys So as I'm just starting out, I have been told and read certain blogs that in the early stages I should submit my site to certain directories, only I would not have any idea which directories I should submit my site to, besides the few that I already know. Any idea how I could find this out? Cheers

Google requires that businesses that serve there customers at their customers' locations must hide its address. However, this causes an notice in Moz Local advising that the Google listing is inconsistent. Is that something to just ignore?
I run a walking tour company that operates from a virtual office. We run tours are set locations outside the office. Because of this, Google requires that we hide our exact location. However, Moz Local is warning us that "incomplete listings can negatively impact your ability to rank well in search engine results". Most listings won't allow you to hide an exact address. Do the search engines understand this and therefore we won't get penalized? Thank you.

Map-pack results for multiple locations in the same city
We just started working with a local business with several offices across Virginia. All of their locations have G+ local pages, and all rank pretty well in map-pack results for their respective cities....except for one location. Two of their offices happen to be in the same city. One ranks well in the local pack, and the other one is totally buried. This is the only location that doesn't rank in the map-pack for its target local queries. This company still has a TON of work to do to clean-up their citations and improve their G+ local pages across all the locations, but I'm wondering if there are any best practices for handling two locations within the same city...we obviously want both offices to rank in the map-pack, and don't want to do anything that might hurt the one that is currently ranking well. I'm confident that generally cleaning up their profile across the board, and adding new citations for all locations would be beneficial, but would appreciate any suggestions or best practices for getting both locations in this one city to perform well. Thanks!
