Using Google key word tool to reseach key words for a site

I have using Google’s key word tool to generate potential Keywords for our site. I have been focusing mainly on the information in “Local Monthly” searches (with the country being set to “New Zealand” as we are not looking to sell internationally. With regards to selecting the Key words for our site is it a matter of simply focusing on the ones that rank highest or are there other variables, in the key word tool I need to allow for. Note at this stage we are not looking to under take a PPC campaign. Thanks for you help

No problems
I tend to use Google's Keyword Tool to find keywords I'm interested in, and then I just use Market Samurai to check the competition.
But keep in mind that a lot of SEOmoz tools would probably do the same job a lot better - like their Keyword Difficulty Tool, Open Site Explorer etc. I just haven't had as much time to play around with those yet
I still like to use both however, because Market Samurai pulls their data from Majestic SEO, which is a larger index than Linkscape. So if you look at both you should get a pretty good picture of where you're at.

I agree with Clancy - my goal is to find words with significant traffic while identifying what can lead to the best conversion and least amount of bouce backs.
Ex: a word, "example" that has 1,000 local searches a month - if I can capture 10% of those searchers (100) vs. "specific example) which has 100 searches and 10% (10), I have more opportunity.

By "the ones that rank highest" I'm assuming you mean the ones with the most traffic?
Keyword research tends to be a bit more complicated than that - but not overly complicated. Basically you want to find a keyword that ticks 3 boxes.
1. It needs to bring in traffic - obviously.
2. It needs to be a relevant keyword that will bring targeted visitors to your site. For example, say you're selling balloons - you want to focus on keywords that will attract visitors wanting to actually buy balloons. It helps to look at a keyword and think, "If I'd just searched for that, what would my intentions be?"
3. It needs to look good from a cost/benefit standpoint - ie, is it a competitive term? is it easy to rank for? How much targeted traffic will I get for the amount of work involved? For this reason, the keywords that get the most traffic are sometimes not the best to go after, because ranking for them can literally take years of hard work in some cases - you have to learn to pick your battles.
I tend to use a combination of Google's Keyword Tool and a program called Market Samurai for keyword research, and I find that this gives me a very accurate and workable picture of what keywords to target and why.

Hello everyone, My Insurance agency ranks high in searches, but the key words in our Title Tag aren't very well optimized at all. Any tools to scan URL to identify keyword opportunities
Hi guys, Looking for tools which can scan content and identify keyword opportunities. I know you can use Google Keyword Planner or tools like Semrush. But was wondering what else there is on the market? Specifically looking for tools which can pull relevant keywords by scanning the content, exactly the same as Google Keyword Planner. Cheers.

Exact Long Tail Keyword Wording?
Hi everyone! I'm currently doing long tail keyword research and I'm coming across keywords such as deer wall print for nursery for the main keyword "deer wall print" which doesn't really incorporate too well into a into a grammatically correct paragraph. Can I use something like **deer wall print for your nursery **or deer wall print is perfect for in a nursery? Does it have to be exact reproduction if I am trying to rank for a long tail keyword term/phrase?

Does Using Brand/Company Name in Title on Multiple Pages Cause Cannibalization
I'm trying to rank for brand-name related keywords for a website. Most of the titles on the site include the page topic followed by the brand-name separated by bars or dashes (ex: title= widget | My Brand). Is this creating cannibalization for the brand-related terms? I was wondering if it was better to leave the brand out of the title all together except on a dedicated page. However, due to the nature of the business I work for there are multiple recognized iterations of the name including acronyms and long-form and short-form versions and creating content for each targeted iteration seems superfluous.

Google Adwords or Wordtracker?
I have been using Google Adwords tool for keyword research until today when I signed up for 7 day trial of Wordtracker. To my astonishment the results were different with a huge margin for most of my keywords. Which of these should I trust more? Do you suggest any other tool which is better than these both and is free or affordable?

Google Keyword Estimator
Hello Does the Google traffic estimator include the impact of instant? For example, if I type the phrase "London restaurant", instant may provide a list of search results for the phrase "London restaurant guide" prior to me confirming whether or not I just want to search using the phrase "London restaurant". Is this registered in any way as a search for the phrase "London restaurant guide" (i.e. does Instant impact upon the search volumes presented in the Google traffic estimator)? In addition, is there any up to date assessment on how reliable the revised traffic estimator is? The tool currently suggests that for a well known brand we are working for does not have any search volume (over a whole year) for the brand keyphrase when used in isolation (there is traffic for various combinations of the brand and a generic term). However, as one would expect, our analytics data is showing that there are in excess of 1 million annual visitors that use the brand keyphrase in isolation to access the website via natural search and nearly 1.5 million via PPC.
