How is the keyword difficulty score calculated in SEOMoz?
-
The SEOMoz PRO tools provide a keyword difficulty score. How is this calculated? And is it a score for organic search competition or for PPC competition?
-
I'd like to chime in and request a formula too. maybe it's a secret because moz doesn't want competitors using this number... but then, it wouldn't take much (i assume) for someone to reverse engineer the score based on data inputs from moz.... so maybe it's not secret? if not, i'd reallllllllyyyy like to know.
interesting sidenote: i've noticed a range of about +/- 10 points on the difficulty score from a given domain authority with a domain's ability to rank for that keyword

Greetings Doug, I echo Mike's request. It would be wonderfully supportive of you or another staff member to give one (or more) examples on how "Domain Authority and Page Authority for the top 20 search results on Google".
I cannot simply present to my boss and say, "SEOMoz shows this keyword as 62% highly competitive." My boss is wise enough to ask, "Explain what 62% means. Show me how this applies."
Fair question.
One example from you in layperson terms would be highly appreciated. Then, I may replicate myself and thereby explain the value and origin of the measure.
Please "teach a person to fish ..."
Cheers, Loren

Thanks Joel, that helped

Hi Doug,
Is there any deeper information available other than "based on Domain and Page Authority"? How is it calculated? You may not know but how about any Mozzers?
Thanks
Mike

Ben, it's search competition based on the Domain Authority and Page Authority for the top 20 search results on Google. The score doesn't come from adwords, that's used for the search volumes.
The links on this page explain how Domain and Page authority is defined:

Straight from SEOMOZ
Where does your tool get its search volume data from?
For this tool, we get our search volume data from Google's AdWords API.http://www.seomoz.org/help/keyword-analysis
I hope this helps.

Wrong page ranking for keyword.
I have a page i'm trying to rank for certain keywords around "emergency vet clinic" the page is domain.com/emergency-vet-care but my home page is the one that is ranking better and better. How can I get the other page to rank for e.g. "emergency vet care" , "emergency animal care" and the main page to rank for just regular vet care? My on page looks pretty good. I've also taken out most references to emergency care on the main home page except for the one link to it. Thanks

Is there any way I can find out a list of the top keywords for my site automatically without having to type in certain words myself and wait on the results?

Advice - Keywords, good semantic practice...
Hi everyone, I'm still new to SEO so bear with me. I'm fairly ok with what determines good 'On page optimization' grading. Have a few good results but mostly for my ecommerce website. Now I'm building up blog content I'm often puzzled how SEO experts balance good editorial web page titles with how people actually search. An example: Buy Biggie Smalls Versace Sunglasses I have created the page title 'Buy Biggie Smalls Versace Sunglasses - Company' Created a and tag with the same keywords... drop the term a few times on the page, add to a few alt tags, add the term to the url.... but this looks contrived & isn't exactly an exciting web page title which would entice people to click through. Or is it? A more interesting web page title might be something like 'Versace & Biggie Smalls - his influence on a new generation of Hip Hop culture'. Ok this is a completely different long-tail keyword phrase. But do I need to do both? How would a seasoned SEO expert blend the dull search term into some interesting page title and hence all other on page optimization aspects. Hope you get what I'm trying to explain. Thanks for looking... Kevin

Keywords in SEO Moz versus Keywords on pages
II'm a little confused by how the SEO Moz keywords relate to our page keywords. Should all the keywords we put in SEO Moz be in our page keywords? Can our SEO Moz keywords span the kepywords of severla pages or do we need ot tighten up and only use 5 for example keywords in SEO Moz and on our pages? Thanks!

Keyword: singular vs plural
Hi, I've been putting some efforts to rank well for "San Antonio Wedding Photographer". I am ranked ok for that but not so on "San Antonio Wedding Photographers". My website is http://www.soobumimphotography.com/ So now, I am trying to rank for "San Antonio Wedding Photographers" instead since Google auto fills wedding "photographers" in search term. Question - Should I change my site title and some post / page title etc? What's the best way to do this? Thank you Soobum

Assesing which keywords to target
Hi Looking for some advice: Situation: Starting and SEO campaign for the French market. We have extensive keyword data from our adwords account as this has been running for a few months. Questions: What should we be looking out for in relations to keywords to target in the seo campaign? How many keywords is it sensible to target or chase? (one person dedicated to the French seo campaign) Thanks for your help, Andrew
