How a change in IP address affects SEO?
-
Our domain is pretty mature, has several quality backlinks - ranks well for our key terms - but we need to change our IP address because we use a cloud provider and it's a shared IP that has had a security breach.
How will this affect rankings? www.layer7.com

I have nothing new to add but wanted to say that both Chris and Adam's answers are spot on from my experience, thumbs up to both of them.

There certainly should be much of an impact in your ranking. However there are a couple things worth considering in this matter:
-Location value: If you are a working on a campaign that is focused on a specific international region then having an IP from that country can be beneficial in the eyes of some search engines in regards to local searches
-Link Value: You'll also want to make sure that you aren't switching to a shared IP which hosts websites that are linking to you already - while in all honesty something that would be extremely rare, if it were the case it would likely lead to the devaluation of those links
-IP History: It's also important to know that you aren't moving to a digital neighborhood that's known in the search engines eyes for housing spam. Think about it like sharing your identity, you wouldn't want someone under your name giving talks about illicit topics. Look up your neighbors with a reverse IP lookup tool such as yougetsignal.com before making the jump.
All in all you likely won't see a big impact from switching your IP address - you just want to do a little due diligence to insure that your new digital home is one that's squeaky clean before moving in!
Cheers,
Adam -
Changing your IP address shouldn't really do anything to your search results as long as your're staying with the same host and you're not moving onto an IP address that's plagued with spam sites.
Here are a couple of otherthreads dealing with that:

Will adding /blog/ to my urls affect SEO rankings?
Following advice from an external SEO agency I removed /blog/ from our permalinks late last year. The logic was that it a) doesn't help SEO and b) reduces the character count for the slug. Both points make sense. However, it makes segmenting blog posts from other content in Google Analytics impossible. If I were to add /blog/ back into my URLs, and redirected the permalinks, would it harm my rankings? Thanks!

Re: Auto Detection of Currency based on IP & Google SEO
Greetings to the fellow Moz community members! On an e-commerce site, I am using a script to change the default currency of storefront based on IP detection ( GBP for UK visitors, CAD for Canadian visitors and so on). My question is : can this create any problems at all in Google Crawling or Indexing? Will google be able to understand the setup? I don't think this should trigger the "cloaking" or presenting different content to search engines vs users, but just want to double check from the collective wisdom here. Thanks for reading, and wish you a good day ahead. Warm Regards Amit

Using Web Applications for SEO
I am in the sign/banner business, for years I have had a flash based web application that I developed which allows customers to design their own signs/banners online. With the demise of flash i am prompted to begin developing an HTML5 based application to take it's place. Developing this software is a rather expensive endeavor so many local sign shops, which don't sell on the web, don't bother to develop such an application, but what if i gave it to them? I assume a fair amount would find great value in such an application thereby allowing their clients to communicate a design idea without having to drive to the store front. The application would actually run embedded on my site thus earning me a link back to my site. Question is this: Is this a bad idea. If dozens of sign shops are running my application embedded on their sites will the help or hurt me? Thanks.

Website's stability and it's affect on SEO
What is the best way to combat previous website stability issues? We had page load time and site stability problems over the course of several months. As a result our keyword rankings plummeted. Now that the issues have been resolved, what's the best/quickest way to regain our rankings on specific keywords? Thanks, Eric
